Big Island advice.....

I'm looking for some input on a BI trip. We just returned from 8 days on Kauai and had a blast. We've been to Oahu and Maui in the past. Kauai is our favorite so far. Anyway, we decided the next trip will be to the Big Island with the kids, ages 12 & 14 when we go.

I've done some basic research on lodging but don't really know where to stay. We'd prefer to stay out of high traffic metro areas. Nicer rather than cheaper is preferred. A great pool or easy beach access would be cool. We are a very active "on the go/keep moving", type of family. We hope to get dive certified before the trip but if not, snorkeling will be high on our list.

Any ideas? Advice? Thanks in advance...

given your criteria, I would recommend the Hilton Waikoloa Village.

The Hilton has no natural sand beach (just a small man-made beach and an algae filled lagoon), unheated pools, and after the novelty of the monorail and boat rides wear off all you're left with is lots and LOTS of people -- and a 15-20 minute trek every time you need to get from your room to your car.

Given your criteria my first suggestion would be the Mauna Kea Resort. Its grounds are quiet, and while the pool is nothing special, the best beach on the island along with some of the island's best snorkeling/scuba diving are right at your doorstep.

Be sure to take your kids snorkeling or scuba diving in Kealakekua Bay (go very early morning for best experience -- you may wind up swimming with wild dolphins), and if they're into astronomy, on a stargazing trip to Mauna Kea summit. Both experiences are magical for most kids that age.

We also like to stay away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to have easy access to restaurants and shopping. You might enjoy the Keauhou area. There are several condo complexes there (Outrigger at Kanaloa for one), and the Keauhou Beach Resort and Sheraton Keauhou are a couple of hotels. Kahalu'u beach is very close, and has awesome snorkeling; lots of fish and turtles. You are also close to Kealakekua Bay, which, as mentioned, has great snorkeling and kayaking. If you'd like horseback riding, we did a trip with King's Trail rides, which takes a ride down to K Bay for snorkeling and lunch, and then a ride back up. It was a fun time.

depends on what side of the island you want to stay on, Hilo or Kona i stayed near captain cook, very quiet. i used vrbo.com and found an apt. for the week- but that is FAR from the volcano. snorkelling is on the capt. cook side.

The Hapuna Prince has a very nice beach. We stayed at the Marriott Waikoloa and enjoyed it. The beach there is very nice as well and right across the street is the Kings village which has a good number of shops and restaurants. There is also a shuttle bus in that area to connect the resorts there. Wherever you stay do have dinner at Roys but be sure to make a reservation first.
