Better to Stay on Kona or Kohala Coast of the Big Island?
Hi Fodorites!
Just wanted to hear your advice and opinions on which coast (Kona or Kohala) is nicest, and has the greatest concentration of things to do, ie. restaurants, sightseeing, water sports, beaches.
Thanks so much! This is for our honeymoon, and we are going to rent a condo, and are trying to figure out what area would be best.
Thanks so much!

Aloha Erin,
The Kona-Kailua area has more hotels especially on Alii Drive along the coast. There are more restaurants there.
The Kohala coast is where the resorts are such as Hilton, Mauna Kea, etc. It is a lot more spread out. You have to drive about 5 miles to a grocery store to get staples. However, there is a shopping mall near Hilton but prices are very high.
The beaches at Mauna Kea and Hapuna resorts are very nice.
For more information on the island of Hawaii, go to Konaweb.com or andhawaii.com.
Aloha,

Aloha Erin,
I would definitely choose the Kohala Coast for your honeymoon. Kona is a fun town to visit and shop/walk around, but not to stay on a honeymoon...it lacks "honeymoon" type accommodations. On a honeymoon you would probably want more ambience than convenience (stores, etc.). Kohala is spread out, but so much more romantic. There is a neat shopping village called Kings Shops in Waikoloa. We stayed at Outrigger's Royal Waikoloan and loved it. It wasn't too big and had a beautiful sandy beach w/ coconut trees in front. On another trip I stayed at the Hilton Waikoloa which was fun, but so huge and very family oriented instead of honeymoon oriented. If you are planning a trip to the Volcanoe Nat'l Park, our fave places to stay was in Volcano Village at the Kilauea Lodge which was very reasonable and very romantic. The restaurant on site evokes romance and old Hawaii. Congrats!

Hi guys!
Thanks so much for your quick responses, and very helpful advice - I really appreciate it.
We are now considering staying at a resort, since it is our honeymoon, and we really want to have that "pampered feeling".
Have a wonderful day, and thanks so much for the kind words - I will let you know what we pick!!

Aloha, Erin! I stayed at the Orchid at Mauna Lani on the Kohala coast. It was beautiful! The outdoor restuarant is right in the sand and the hammocks are right up to the ocean's edge. The 4 Seasons at Hualalai (spelling?!) was lovely also. We took a helicopter ride out of Kona. Good luck!
