Best Western Atlantic Beach

Monica,
I've never stayed there (I live in Newport) but the Atlantic Beach hotel looks quite nice to me. Its claim to fame is its location near one of the local beaches (it's across the street). The location seems nice, off the main street (less noise) and with a nice view of an inland pond. The neighborhood is a small version of most beach front areas with restaurants, bars, hotels etc...
One would not call it within walking distance to Newport altho it's on a bus line right in to town. You would need to drive (or maybe the hotel shuttles?) or take the bus for a quick 5 min. ride into the center of Newport.
There probably aren't any reasonably-priced hotels in the center of Newport. The more reasonable they are the further out of town they are (chains such as Holiday Inn Express and Howard Johnsons etc.) But one never knows, check the tourism website at www.gonewport.com for a massive listing of hotels/motels.
Enjoy your stay.

Best Western Atlantic Beach, North Carolina (thought there might be another Atlantic Beach)? I stayed there last weekend. The beach is ok, but not as pretty as further south or further north like Ocracoke (somewhat dark sand). I think you could walk to the Food Lion and to a nearby bar (not useful though if you're traveling with small children). The hotel itself is standard chain beachfront- outside balconies, somewhat sulfury water. It was clean, but nothing spectacular. I was there for a party, so I didn't really do much exploring of the area, mostly socialized with the people there. Hope this helps. Apologies if you're looking for a different Atlantic Beach.

Hi,
Lucky you. You're right across the street from one of our favorites FLO's. Clam Shack. Best fried seafood in town. It's a very casual place. Order at counter and take food to your table.
There are just too many restaurants to judge altho my husband and I have tried many. There are many "nicer" places or are you thinking of family type?

My husband and I love the finer restaurants, but since we'll be travelling with a 1 year old and 2 month old we know that's out of the question!! How's Scales and Shells? We LOVE seafood...
Thanks for the recommendation - we'll definitely try it.

Monica,
Scales and Shells is a great choice from what I hear. My husband and I have never wanted to wait to get a table so haven't eaten there yet. Very busy as are most restaurants during the tourist season. Puerini's downtown for Italian, Yesterday's for a more casual dinner, Becky's BBQ in Middletown for great BBQ sandwiches, Sea Shai in Middletown (close to your hotel) for Japanese/Korean. The nicest places that have reps right now are The Mooring, Cheeky Monkey, West Deck, Asterisk & Obelisk, and the Inn at Castle Hill.
