The Super Shuttle will cost in excess of $75 for five people. Further the trip can take forever - waiting for a shuttle to show up and you could be the last one dropped off in Manhattan. Car service will cost no more than $45 and that includes a tip and toll. It will also be faster than the Super Shuttle.

Thank you for your suggestions. I agree that the car service would be better/cheaper than the Super Shuttle. However, any car service I've looked up on the net will only take 4 people in a car. They then price about $75-100 for a limo or van. Does anyone know of a particular car service that will do it well for less?

You could also take two cabs into the city. That would work out fine as long as everyone has the street address. It's much easier, from my past experiences, to just hop in a cab from the airport cab stand, rather than try to pick out which car is there for you, out of the hundreds circling.
The cab ride from JFK into Manhattan is $35 plus tolls and tip. I would think that two cabs would run you about $85-90.
Just another option. Good luck.

Sorry....
I forgot to add that I've used various limo companies that advertise in the airline magazines (the less expensive ones, that is) and have found them to be rather unreliable, for the most part.
With these "particular" companies, you can get a stretch limo into the city for around the same price as a cab or car company, but they've left me high and dry half the time. I don't use them anymore for that reason. Guess you get what you pay for.
I've also seen posts on the Super Shuttle stopping at every hotel on their way in, so keep in mind that the time you've lost might not be worth the money saved.
Let us all know what you decide and how it works out.

Four adults and a 3 year old went from JFK to Manhattan in a taxi. THe taxi dispatcher said four was the maximum but I spoke to the driver and he agreed to take us. If you have a small child along you might not have any trouble finding a cab. A car service might also agree to take five if a child is involved. If not you could ask for a minivan and the cost is about $50. A taxi is $35..

How about putting the kids on the subway?
No, not kidding- as teenagers often can be, they probably have gotten on your nerves by the time you get to JFK (and visaversa), and the subways REALLY aren't all that bad .. the kids might actually enjoy it. The adults could travel by shuttle with all the luggage. Subway fare will be $1.50 each, you take a shuttle bus from JFK terminal to Howard Beach stop on the "A" train.

Actually I think the subway suggestion is the BEST. The A train stops at 59th and Broadway/8th Ave so you would have just a couple of blocks to walk.
During the day the traffic has been very bad comming out of JFK into the city.
The subway will probably be quicker and you don't have to worry about traffic at all and at $1.50pp it's one of NYC's best bargins.
I would also recommend getting a weekly or daily subway/bus pass. I get them all the time and it is so convenient not to have to worry about change or tokens, and you can get on the subway or bus all day/evening long transfer from bus to subway or vice versa.
Have a great time while you are here.

You pick up an MTA bus outside the arrival terminal. There is no charge for the bus. The bus takes you to the Howard Beach Station where you take the A train to Manhattan . Get off at the 59th Street station. Follow exit signs to 57th St. exit and you will exit at the corner of 57th and 8th. 57th and 7th is a short walk away. Unless there is a major traffic tie-up the taxi will arrive at the hotel well before the people who take the train. The train is going to take a minimum of 1 1/4 hours terminal to hotel and possibly a bit longer.
