Best Tours in Los Angeles?

We will be in LA 12-30 - 1-2. What are the best tours to take?

I would visit the Getty Villa in Malibu. The setting is beautiful and the museum is quite interesting if you enjoy art.

Best for what - what sorts of things do you expect to tour?

Will you have a car? If so, you really don't need to take any guided tours.

I highly recommend the guided tour of Warner Bros. studios. Call Warner Bros. in advance for reservations.

Thanks for all your replies. Yes, we will have a car. Any other suggestions with a car?

Thanks.

We are heading out the following weekend and planning to tour the Disney/Gehry Concert Hall, Pacific Design Center, and Getty Villa/Malibu. But if you haven't done the Getty Center, both the architecture, grounds, and art are wonderful (we did that last trip). We are not tv/movie people so can't comment on the Warner Bros. tour although it is highly recommended.

Just so you know, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has at least ten times the exhibit space of the Getty Center. LACMA is where you go in L.A. to see a full range of world-class art. The Getty Center is where you go for views (on a clear day), architecture, the gardens and (lastly) art (primarily arranged in themed or topic-specific small collections).

Visiting the Getty Villa in Malibu requires a parking reservation.

Jean, I lived there a couple a years and was a card-carrying member of LACMA. Loved the Asian collections and their setting. Saw some amazing shows too. I do agree it is undervalued by many.

However, the Getty has one of the most well-funded endowments in the world and its collections are hardly second class. From the Destinations Section of this website about the Getty Center:

"Notable among the paintings are Rembrandt's The Abduction of Europa, van Gogh's Irises, Monet's Wheatstack, Snow Effects, Morning, and James Ensor's Christ's Entry into Brussels."

I never said the Getty's collection was less than first-class. LACMA also has a first-class collection, and a greater percentage of it is on display at all times.

The main exhibit at the Center right now is Medieval Treasures from the Cleveland Museum of Art.
