Best Time to Visit Maine
Another quick question about the potential trip that my husband and I are trying to make to Maine. We are on a bit of a limited schedule, we would like to go in October, but only have two weeks. Either October 2 - 6 or October 16 -20 (or October 30 - November 3). I've heard that early October is great for foliage, but pretty crowded because of that. We aren't so much interested in that as we are getting away and relaxing. I don't want it to be too cold to do some hiking and outdoors kind of thing (heck, I may even be interested in skiing one day, if they do it that early up there). We also don't want to spend too much money, so I was thinking that towards the end of October some places may drop their rates (we were thinking of staying in a B & B).
Any suggestions on which week would be best to go? What is the weather like at the beginning of October versus the end of October? Do they get much snow up there during the end of October? We drive a VW Golf (and will be coming from Maryland) and I don't want to get stuck somewhere!

September is the perfect time for me....rates are down as they await the foliage crowds.
I think your later October dates would be very risky....the weather could get cold, it's not uncommon to have snow for Halloween..........and also lots and lots of inns and motels close for the season middle of October.

Here is a place that would fall within your budget, even at foliage time. It's on a little lake so you could kayak and (weather permitting) swim...but it's also very close to the coast (you'll find lots of info on this area if you put "BOOTHBAY" into the fodors search).

you might look at the moosehead lake/greenville region. or a bit closer for your drive the rangley lake area.
more specifically and much further south - lovell.
there is a wonderful b&b: www.centerlovellinn.com. it is 5 mins. from kezar lake which is stunning. they have a really pretty view of mt. washington and surrounding peaks. very good restaurant with a creative chef, plus a couple other spots nearby for less expensive fare. i'd come earlier than the 30th-3rd. skiing won't be til thanksgiving. someone at the inn can tell you where the best hiking of the moment would be.
