In your opinion, how would you rank the scuba diving between the four main islands (Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Big Island)? I will be on each very soon, and even have opportunities to do night dives off all but the Big Island (so unfortunately - please keep this in mind when ranking - the Manta night dive does not count!).

Due to so many things to do on each island, my time is going to be tight, so if I need to cut some dives, I do not want it to be the "best" ones.

Any advice is appreciated!

I'm no expert on diving over there (just have done Oahu so far) but I rented a cottage from a retired State of Hawaii marine biologist in April on Kauai. He told me that the best diving is out of Kona on the Big Island. He said it had to do with the smallest amount of runoff and fewer people = less pollution overall.

He said the best diving in Kauai are the trips that go to that private island off the southwest coast (Nihau? - I can't remember at the moment).

It is the general concensus among the diving community that the Big Island (Kona) has the best diving of all the islands. I was just over there for a long weekend and the dives I did were great.

Oahu has the best wreck diving of all the islands, if that is an interest of yours. I haven't made it over to Maui to do any diving yet, but it is supposed to have great shore diving and the diving at Molokini is also supposed to be good.

I don't hear so much about Kauai. I suppose the diving there is pretty good, but nothing that makes it stand out in particular.
