Hi, we need a restaurant in the northend for nest Thursday night. We love Antico Formo, but last time we were there we were jammed into a corner and could barely move. In fact, I had to keep turning around to get silverware out of the breakfront to hand it to the waitress.

Can anyone recommend someplace with great Italian food, charm and a little bit more space between the tables?

Thanks!

Because of the Big Dig we haven't been for a long time. There's Sage, but it's small and they will be moving to larger quarters in the South End. Most of the restaurants I find Cramped. We went a few months ago to Neptune Oyster but sat at the bar.

Too bad you don't like the space constraints...Giacomo's food is SOOO good, but also has little elbow room.

Perhaps Cafe Florentine has a bit more space...food is pretty good as well.

Check out the recommendations on the Boston Phantom Gourmet website. Good luck!

Lots of restaurants in the North End have the 'cramped table' / 'cozy' - atmosphere -
but we also love Sage, - Rabias, Piccolo Nido has plenty of elbow room, but is low on the charm factor, but the food is great. You can also try looking on opentable.com, and see what's available and link to their web pages and check them out that way as far as menu, atmosphere and often photos of restaurant.

My husband and I have been to Taranta several times. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is lovely but it is a bit pricey. There is a wonderful male waiter upstairs who is fun but unfortunately his name escapes me right now.

For more upscale, we like Carmen, Sage, Maurizio's and Bricco. For more traditional, Pagliuca's, L'Osteria, Giacomo's and Artu.

Has anyone eaten at Trattoria di Monica?

Our kids begged to go back to Antico Forno so we did, and I don't think it was as good as last time.

They don't have tablecloths on the tables anymore, which bugged me, it cheapened it, and the lights were too bright. My husband thought the gnocchi was overcooked so we won't be going back.

I wish we had stuck with Trattoria di Monica. Next time we'll go there.
