Best resort in Clearwater

I am planning to honeymoon in Clearwater, FL in August 2003. Can anyone recommend good resorts. I'm considering the Hilton, Adams Mark, Radisson. In St. Petersburg Don CeSar. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

I agree that the Sheraton Sand Key is nice - actually the location is great. I think the Don CeSar is much better than the Hilton and Adams Mark by far.

PC - I would also have to say that overall the Sheraton Sand Key would be my pick. Nice hotel rooms, very nice beach and pool areas as well as good location. Clearwater Beach which is just across the causeway bridge has shopping, dining and nightlife. Possible to walk, but a car is preferrable. The Radisson Suites on Sand Key is also worth a look. It is pretty much across the street from the Sheraton but located on the bayside of Sand Key and not the ocean side. No beach at this resort.

Here are my suggestions for the West Coast of Florida:
Clearwater - Sheraton on Sand Key
St. Petersburg - Don Cesar
Naples - Hyatt Bonita Springs or Ritz Carlton

Thanks for the suggestions...the Sheraton does look very nice as well as the Radisson. It's so hard to choose .

Don Cesar is the nicest of the resorts in the Clearwater/St Pete area. Sheraton OK too, but a cut below. I love, absolutely love, the Hyatt in Bonita Springs (actual name is Hyatt Coconut Point). Beautiful hotel...but then, you weren't asking about that area and it's about 2 1/2 hrs south.

HarryR...we *finally* made it to Lauderdale this past weekend, stayed at Pier 66. What a *place*!!! If that area of Lauderdale isn't "how the other half lives", then nothing is. It certainly seemed to be where the big boys played! It was spur of the moment and I went without my notes from you all, now long gone, but we will be back! Interesting comparing beach to beach, here to there. We have the prettier, whiter sand, but their water is a spectacular color. It was a great weekend.

OliveOyl: Glad to hear that you guys were finally able to get over to my favorite FL. beach city. The Pier 66 is very cose to Lago Mar where we normally stay. Must agree with your beach comments. Fort Lauderdale has some GREAT dining that you have to check out on your next trip.

Harry..yup, we could see your place from the balcony of ours. We missed the great dining. Shirttail Charlie's one night and...something or other Fish House the other. (Can you tell how impressed I was? LOL) Didn't matter...we had a terrific time, and having just finished huge Christmas meals, food truly was pretty far down on my list of important things to see and do. We'll save that for next time.

Have a great New Year.

OliveOyl - Happy New Year to you and family as well. Wouldn't it be nice to sailover to FLL someday ;-) . I can picture you sailing up the intercoastal to Pier 66. We did an awesome Brunch at the Hyatt, but it may have been before Hyatt acquired Pier 66. Stay well.

I'm up, worrying...waiting for DH to get out of bed to go down and visit our boat. We had terrific storms last night, hours of thunder and lightning, winds steady at 28 with gusts to 50 and tides two feet above normal at an already high tide. lt; The boat is in a new slip and we weren't yet sure the lines were right so I'm anxious to get down there and see if she's still in one piece...or if we now own an old scratched up/splintered tub. How would that look next to the mulit-million $$ boats at Pier 66??

Harry...met a man yesterday at our marina from Vero Beach, but keeps his boat here because the sailing is better on this coast...says there's "no place to go" over there and slips can run $1,000 a month because of the demand from transient snowbird boats heading south along the ICW!!!

Happy New Year all, fair winds and following seas!

Suggestion: skip Clearwater in hurricane season! Head somewhere more exotic!!! (I live near Clearwater and would not pick it for my honeymoon unless I was over 65!)

I stayed at the Sheraton Sand Key last summer. I thought it was very nice. However, I felt it was more of a family location rather than honeymoon location. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with any of the other hotels in the area. A couple of people mentioned Naples and Bonita which are nice but about 3 hours south of Clearwater. I am not sure if you had a reason you wanted to stay in Clearwater.
