Best place to visit
Hello, I am new to this Fodor forum. My name is Larry. I live just north of St Louis. I am near the border close to Alton, Illinois. I love to travel and would like to talk about the places I have been in my lifetime, and would like to share your favorite places. Anyway I guess you could say I am very fortunate to take a trip or 2 once a year. Growing up and finishing high school, we never had the money to go anywhere. That changed since I got married and we both worked. We started out not traveling very far going to Indianapolis for the pro tennis. I liked that a lot since I played and had a tennis group which we got together and went for a few days. Then a little later me and my wife got brave and went to Orlando Florida. It was our first time on a plane. I was not too thrilled but to me was not as bad as I thought. Later we started going farther , some we drove and some trips we took the plane. Al this traveling was mostly in the United States. One thing we loved was National Parks. I had been to Grand Canyon, Bryce NP, Capitol Reef NP, Zion NP, Crater Lake NP, Yellowston NP, Glacier NP, Great Smokey Mountains NP. I guess my favorite is Grand Canyon NP. What amazes me is all the scenery around this park's are so pretty. As one could imagine, I was stopping to take photos every few miles. My wife loves to travel like me. Last year we were trying to go on a cruise to Hawaii, but got cancelled. We are hoping it will be available this year in October. I will close saying I hope that everyone who travels has a safe and wonderful time in doing so. Larry

I am happy to be the first to say welcome to Fodor’s. It is kind of like a family, a bit crazy, some squabbling, some difference of opinion, much agreement and so much support for travel and on a personal level.
All of your experience in the Great Parks will be most appreciated by Americans and visitors as well.
Many Americans have traveled more in other countries than in the States and quite a few Fodorites live in other countries so there is a ton of information about that when you wish to branch out.
I have lived in St Louis and nearby towns, still have family there, but have not been back in several years. I also did not travel (or fly) until I was an adult. I am a Senior now, but still love new experiences.
Dive in and enjoy Fodors.

Welcome to Fodors! If you want to visit Hawaii, you might want to fly to Honolulu and then take the 7 day cruise that visits several islands. Hawaii has recently dropped many of their covid restrictions.
My wife and I flew to Honolulu last November and had to download pictures of our vaccination cards to Hawaii Safe Travels and state where we would be staying. We had to show our vaccination cards and wear a mask into every restaurant we visited. Our DD and SIL live in Ewa Beach so we stayed with them. Our first trip to Hawaii was to the island of Maui which was also great. During the past 16 years I have driven in and found at least one geocache in all 50 states (and DC).
If you do get to Maui, try to drive up or take a tour bus to Haleakala.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy it and learn a lot. If you haven't seen Ken Burns' "The National Parks: America's Best Idea" I recommend it. https://www.pbs.org/kenburns/the-national-parks/ Our national parks and the Bill of Rights are two of the things that make America great. There are some premiere national parks such as Yosemite, Yellowstone, and Zion. I've been to several national parks including Sequoia which may be my favorite. Cheers!

Hawaii is a state, no reason not to rent a car and drive to sights on the days when the ship is in port for a full day or more.
My late husband and I went to Kauai every year for almost 17 years and stayed at the Marriott in Lihue. I always felt so sorry for those folks who got no further than the Barefoot Bar at the Marriott or took the ship's shuttle to Hilo Hattie's (it was still there then) or K-Mart. If you do decide to take "excursions" avoid the big bus type. They are restricted on where they can drive due to road width and curviness etc,
