Two standards are Serendipity and My Favorite Dessert Company.

I think it depends a little on the atmosphere you are going for. I would absolutely second Veniero's as the best place but it is loud and busy, and the tables turn over quickly. You will be AMAZED at how many wonderful pasteries they have and you will gain a pound or two just walking in the door, but it is so worth it. Just walk back to your hotel and see more of the city and work off your pastery (before it lands on your hips, lol, I know that one well, lol)

If you are on the west side, try CAfe Mozart, right off Broadway near Lincoln Center.

If you are in LIttle Italy there are several cute little places.

If you are in the Village, Cafe Figero.
on Bleeker St.

On the upper East Side try Serendipity on 60th just off 3rd Ave.

You will probably also hear of Ferrara's and there are several around the city now as another good suggestion.

Enjoy your trip.

I love City Bakery on 18th Street, near 6th Ave.

Here's another vote for Serendipity, although it can get a bit crowded.

I LOVE Payard Patisserie, in the 70's and Lex. It is very French (even the attitude at times) but the pastries are divine.

PAYARD! You think you've fallen into Paris. Everything is delicious including the coffee.
