Best place for star gazing on Maui?

We will be on Maui during the new moon in April and are staying in Wailea. I would think the best star gazing would be up on Haleakala and we might spend an evening there, but I wonder how excited I will be to drive back down in the dark.

Are there any other suggestions or will any dark place do? Will it be hazy at sea level due to water vapor in the air?

Might be a bit chilly up on Haleakala as well !

The Hyatt in Kaanapali has stargazing, telescopes etc on the roof but I don't know the details, might be on the website for that particular hotel.

I am the owner of mauiskyandstars.com

Go to
http://www.mauiskyandstars.com/
to see my astrophotography/telescope viewing website.
I have a permit to operate my telescope viewing business at the summit of Haleakala, and yes it can get cold (down parkas provided).
Weather conditions are always changing and you would need to call and plan ahead if you want to experience one of the most amazing astronomy viewing sites in the world.
Aloha,
Penrod Vladyka

FYI to Mauisky -- Fodor's rules prohibit commericials advertising on the forums. In fact, when you signed up you were supposed to read terms of service and agree to them.

But at least you were honest and said who you were upfront.

As pspercy suggested the Hyatt has one too. I inquired about this same thing since I would love to see this (will be there end of May) my friends don’t even want to think about the cold so I settled for the Hyatt, I inquired about it and you do have to make reservations and on Friday and Saturday (I think) at 11:00 p.m. they have a show for couples only with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. They only take 10 people per show and they start at 9:00 with the 11:00 p.m. for couples only. This may be a good alternative if you don’t want to drive down after dark. Hope this helps and have fun.
