Daughter and I just saw Avenue Q and Spelling Bee. I was rather surprised at how much I liked Spelling Bee - tears running down my face I was laughing so hard. And the theatre is small and intimate, really a fun setting.

Spelling Bee is a great show, but I wouldn't recommend it as someone's very first show. I loved it, but I think for a first experience, people are generally looking for a bigger "song and dance" type of show.
And just for clarity's sake, Spelling Bee did not win the Tony for Best Musical. It was nominated, but lost to Spamalot.

Duh. I knew that. What was I thinking?
Nevertheless it did win these awards as well as almost universally rave reviews:
Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical; 2005 Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Director of a Musical, Outstanding Book of a Musical, and Ensemble; and the 2005 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and Tony Award for best featured actor in a musical.
So it should hardly be called "underrated" -- it is rated very high.
I'd agree thought it would be a bit offbeat for those looking for the true "big Broadway musical" experience.

Yes, probably. I still haven't gotten over that one. Avenue Q was fun -- but best musical of the year?
