Best Maui Beaches

I am staying near Kapalua late January. We stay in a private house and must drive to a beach for a day trip. Where can we (4 adults) go to swim and snorkle and not be too crowded?

Have you been to Hawaii before? If not, drive around past Wailea and Makena to the lava fields. It's awesome (unless you have already been to the Big Island and seen the same thing there). There is snorkeling right off the road ... not crowded, lots of locals go there. The beach itself isn't the greatest. On this same day, you could also go to Big Beach (I think that;s the name) near Makena ... it's a bit more crowded but very large and lovely.

Definately Big Beach. Big waves and lots of room.

I don't have suggestions, but know that you can find a beach a lot closer to Kapalua than the ones mentioned. It will be at least an hour drive (I would think) from Kapalua to past Makena. There has to be something in Kapalua or Kanapali - Black Rock, maybe?

Either
http://www.maui.net/~tkern/beaches.html
or
http://www.hawaii.com/activities/beaches/maui.html
will give you plenty of info. Some of the best beaches are near Kapalua, but I don't know about winter conditions.

But Charles, isn't that particular beach too rough for wading or do you prefer rough surf?
