Best location to stay in NY to see Attractions

Will be driving from Disney and spending about 4 to 5 days in NY before going back home. Which would be a good location to stay to visit the various attractions in NY?

This is our first visit to NY and we want to see the normal touristy stuff. If you know of any good budget accommodation in that location will be helpful.

And if you are NYer, what are the sites that should be missed besides Liberty?

When is your trip? If it is any time soon, it might be hard to find a great place to stay. I waited until after spring break (mid-March) to start planning our July vacation which includes NYC. By the third week of March, many of the places that were recommended were already booked for the second or third week in July. I booked the Embassy Suites, just as a fall-back. After reading positive reviews, however, I kept the reservation.

In my opinion, the best place for first timers to stay is right in Times Square for the thrill of it.

I suggest:

The Doubletree
The Renaissance
The Marriott Marquis.

I don't think there is a bigger thrill for a first timer than Times Square.

kvictor, what is your budget per night? That will probably determine your hotel and location.('Budget' means different things to different people) How many are you? How many rooms or do you need a suite type room (little kids who can't stay in the room alone?)And when are you coming? Weekday or weekend?
Decent, not fancy rooms in NYC hotels run about $200 per night and up

I'd check all the online hotel sites for info on rates and what is still availalbe. Also Priceline if you are looking for a better pricing. www.hotwire.com says their prices are lowest, so check there as well.

Anywhere you can find a hotel within your price range in Manhattan is close enough to see the sites, since the sites are all over Manhattan from top (The Cloisters and several historic homes and buildings) to the bottom (Staten Island Ferry, Lady Liberty, Wall St, World Trade Center, Trinity Church, St Paul's Chapel, City Hall, Chinatown, Little Italy,,,,,,,,,)

Have a great time.

There is no one hotel in NYC near everything - since tourist attraactions are spread out over more than 8 miles in Manhattan, islands in the harbour and some of the outer boroughs. No matter where you stay you'll need to take the subway to a lot of places.

Since you're dirivng from Disney it's worth mentioning that the oly hotel in the city with free parking is the Travell Inn. Otherwise expect $35 to $40 per night to park. And you can;t use the car to get around the city - since parking is nearly impossible.

You don;t say who/how many your are - which will at lest partly affect your hotel choice. Many hotels have tiny rooms that fit 2 people only - so if you have kids you may want to consider one of the all suite hotels - affinia or similar. Or - with kids you may want to stay on the upper west side to be near Central Park - depending on their ages.

And do tell us what you mean by budget. The average NYC room rate (not deluxe) is about $300 per night. Naturally there are places that are less - but - they do tend to be booked far in advance.

Inevitably when visitors complain that New York City is dirty/loud/crowded/etc, they stayed in Times Square.

New Yorkers avoid that area like the plague, but of course it's a "must-see" for visitors.

But you DON'T have to stay there.

I suggest Central Park South or midtown east of 6th Avenue (e.g., Parker-Meridien). The W on Lexington Avenue is a good choice.

Good luck & Enjoy NYC!

OK, Sorry for that rant...it's just a pet peeve of mine.
I now live in Georgia and when you tell people that you are from NY, they automatically assume NYC...I like to tell them that in NY, we have farms and cows and everything! lol

Totally agree! I went to school up in Potsdam (~20 minutes from Quebec) and New York state is so much better than NYC. Take a look at visting the Adirondacks.

Last September we stayed at the Marriott Residence Inn Times Square. The name is misleading as it's not right in Times Square, just off a bit, across from Bryant Park. A great location though, walking distance to ESB, Macy's, Broadway, Top of the Rock, etc without the chaos of Times Square. And they have free full breakfast and Mon to Thurs Manager's Reception, which was everything from spagetti to soup and salad. I recommended it to my boss for his trip and he loved it too.
