Hands down, best in the state of Michigan is J&L in Muskegon. Besides being the best, this place is so clean you could eat off the floors. It looks and is run like fast food, but you won't find better.

A little place in Gettysburg, PA. I can't remember the name of the place. Just ask anyone, they'll tell you where to go.

Oh, the Logan airport post reminded me...There's a place at the Atlanta Airport (I can't remember which concourse) called something like the Oscar Myer Construction Company where you get to build your own or select from a variety of combinations. The best airport food I have ever had, except maybe the sandwiches at the Frankfurt Germany airport.

This isn't a vote for the best...but am curious.. does anyone remember John's Hot Dogs in downtown Boston.

John certainly wasn't friendly, but he sure had a following.

By far the best hot dog is from

Gene and Judes Vienna's
It's near the corner of Grand Ave. and River Road in River Grove IL. As always, don't expect ketchup, they've never served it. They ONLY SELL HOT DOGS, FRIES, AND TAMALES! That's it, and has been for gollly, I bet 40 years now.

Rutt's in Clifton NJ. Deep Fried bursting with energy and flavor. PBS had a great show last fall on the Great American Hot Dog. Showed regional favorites from across the country. Some interesting variations. I was so hungry watching the thing.

Of those listed so far I have tried 4 of them:

1. Hoffmans Hout Haus- Syracuse

Plump, perfect dogs.

2. Rutts Hutt- Clifton,NJ

Unique taste...since theyre fried. Tend to shrink a little.

3. Manush- GWU, Washington, DC

Where else can you eat a good hot dog and be schooled in Eastern Philiosophy?

4. Zweigels- Western NY

Pretty good...but they cannot compare to Hoffmans.

Now that everyone has posted what THEY think is the best, I will humbly express what IS THE BEST. Buffalo, New York is home to the Charcoal Hots; whoever thought of boiling, steaming or grilling a hot dog when you could just as easily Char-broil it! Growing up, we always went to Pats; but he obviously retired after making billions on his dogs; so now there is TED's which also existed way back when. Not only are they a Buffalo institution (way before anyone ever heard of wings) but the owner moved out to Tempe AZ and appears to be prospering in the land of chimichangas. Have a glass of Loganberry to wash it down.
If you can't get a Teds, and you don't have a charcoal barbecue nearby, try going to Costco for great big Hebrew National dogs with a drink (refillable) for a buck fifty.

The Varsity in Atlanta makes the best chili dogs - also pretty good burgers...

Once long ago, in a place just down the street, there lived the greatest hot dog of all time. It was an all-beef frank on a steamed bun, topped with yellow mustard, freshly chopped onions and a meaty Greek-style chili sauce. But Amos'n'Andy's is not more and now my quest is to find something close.
Paschall's Grill (Cafe) in Durham makes a great chili dog, and if you are in North Carolina you will find that is the standard. You don't order a chili dog, you order a hot dog and get a chili dog. And you can add onions and slaw, at your request.
Some other fine hotdogs in the Tar Heel State include Bill's in Washington, Dick's in Wilson, The Hot Wiener, Roast Grill in Raleigh, Warren's 'Hot' Dogs in Greenville, Booney's in Rocky Mount, Shorty's in Wake Forest and Jim's in Graham.
North Carolina is the King of Chili Dogs and, frankly, Durham is the No. 1 City of tube steaks, since it has its own hot dog chain, The Doghouse, owned by Stuart Henderson. And Stuart serves up an excellent hot dog, with great chili and slaw.
Also recommended in the Bull City are It's a Wiener and Wimpy's.
Yum.

When in Alaska, stop and try the foot long Iditiroddog at the Anchorage airport.

Also have great memories of the original Nathans in Coney Island.

Thank you Tony, for confirming what I've long known to be true - the Hoffman's dogs in Syracuse are phenomenal (no offense to Rochester but Hoffman's really is the best in that entire region). Meier and Ranz is another good Syracuse hotdog maker but still not as good as Hoffman's. My relatives in California visit once every 3 -5 years (they relocated to Freson in 1967) and always take home 20 poounds of Hoffman's coneys and hotdogs packed in dry ice.

Ditto Ted's Hotdogs in Buffalo, NY. I used to live in Chicago and have eaten New York and Washington hot dogs, but Ted's are the best.

You have to stand online to get them, the ambiance is non-existant but the dog is a miracle. They make their own chili topping too, and that is the added perfection.

You can keep the oversweet loganberry soda (a Buffalo obsession--yuck!) but those Ted's hotdogs were the best.
