Jetset1, you're right - that's a scene. Coming past Potter Marsh and around Beluga Point on the Seward Hwy leaving Anchorage isn't half bad, either, especially if the mountains across the inlet are out.
US 101 NB leaving Astoria is a dandy too - the Columbia looks like a small ocean; the bridge goes on and on and on...

Pulling into Bridalveil Falls parking lot and seeing it so close and framed by the trees was awesome. Also, the view you get of Cincinnati coming in from northern Kentucky on a clear day is beautiful.(and as it is hidden by a hill--it appears suddenly which would qualify it as dramatic)
Although it is not approached by car--first view of Lake Louise was unforgettable.

Lake Shore Drive south into Chicago is awesome. For NYC, heading out of the Holland Tunnel and taking the TPK connector road, you get an eerily close view of the Statue of Liberty. Before 9/11 it was awesome, with the twin towers. Now it is still incredible, and almost means more, after all we've been through.

I have been fortunate to do some of those mentioned, Ft. Pitt tunnel, A1A through the Fla. Keys, Into Cininnati from Ky., Mt. Rushmore, the drive through Big Sur and Malibu, into D.C. but none beats the drive into my driveway after work

Driving at night across the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan is pretty stellar, especially if the bridge is lit up and the view is clear. You can usually see south to the Statue of Liberty. Other favorites are in Italy: driving into Orvieto at night because the city is beautifully lit (and the winding road made it a trip to remember), and climbing the hills into Assisi.

Wawona Tunnel into Yosemite Valley, of course; I need to go visit my dad so I can see it again.
On Hwy. 24/285 heading south and west in Colorado, you come down a pass toward Johnson Village. As you round a curve, a large valley opens up before you, and boom! A huge range of fourteeners explodes from the valley floor. It's quite spectacular.

I agree with the poster about the view of Manhattan from the Newark Bay turnpike extension. New York City appears suddenly, like Oz in the distance. No other city skyline can match. and yes, the sadness of what's missing is felt, but it is especially poignant on the anniversary, when they have the massive lights from ground zero rising into the sky like ghosts..
