I like the New Asia Gardens. Dim sum is a "brunch-style" meal, so it's usually served around late morning to just before lunch.

While many on this forum rave about Yank Sing, I am partial to an authentic dim-sum spot in the heart of Chinatown on Jackson St. just off Grant. The name is Pearl City and it had the best, broadest selection of dim sum I have ever run across with only the freshest ingredients. It is definitely not a main tourist stop, as 99% of the patrons are Asian. I wish I could tell you the hours, but I know I have eaten there many times between the hours of 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and the carts were rolling. HIGHLY recommended. Best dim sum I have ever had, and I've had a bit.

Also suggest a Wok Wiz walking tour of Chinatown which will end up with dim sum. It's a good way to see things you might not notice otherwise. Down near SFO in Millbrae is the Hong Kong Flower Garden on El Camino for dim sum. Also wonderful. I think the hours for dim sum are usually 10-11 to 3 pm although some of the more touristy places go all afternoon. Enjoy and watch out for the chicken feet!

Although it's not much in the way of amibience, Good Luck Dim Sum on Clement Street (not in Chinatown, but off 19th), has pork buns for $.40 each and other dim sum 3 for $1.00. You can't beat the price if you're on this side of town! There are a few tables to sit at, but most get theirs to go.

Another vote for the Wok Wiz walking tours. The regular tour ends with Dim Sum; then there's the "Eat your way through Chinatown" tour... It's well worth the fee for the splendid and amusing commentary. Much more enriching experience than wandering around Chinatown on your own...

We vote for the Lichee Garden 1416 Powell St. at Broadway. We were looking for an authentic Chinatown dim sum house and we found this one in our Zagat guide. It was outstanding and of course the prices were cheap.

Although some of the more "homey" places are great, this is our all time favorite. You must try dim sun at Ton Kiang, out on Geary. Very nice, elegant, but inexpensive. Try to get a seat downstairs if you want more privacy. We went there once w/ 10 people for dim sun, and we must have had 2 of everything. it ended up being less than $10 per person. Very classy place- we're there every time we're in the city
