The best beach in the US has to be one with warm, swimmable water, so that rules out the West Coast and most of New England.
Florida has all of the best beaches in the Continental US; Hawaii rules the Pacific, but is remote and expensive.
Top Florida Beaches:
Ft Walton in the panhandle for its beauty and desolation.
St. Petersburg/Clearwater (in the early spring before the water gets a little murky for the summer) for low cost and ease of visiting.
Miami Beach for beach life mixed with a hot night life and various cultural influences.
There you have it!

You've all missed the boat and overlooked St. John,us Virgin Islands ! We have the most beautiful, pure, sugar white sand beaches in the world ! 2/3rds of the island is National Park, green mountains, palm lined beaches, amazing snorkeling. I promise you won't be disappointed....

I agree with the majority: of all the beaches you can Drive to, The fine white sand and clear blue waters of the Florida Keys and W.coast are worth the drive 20 hour drive from Iowa.

I vote for Laguna Beach -- not the main beach right in town, but the one at the state park just north of town.

Thanks so much for all of the input! I just wish now that I could find a way to go discover all of these places on my own.

Seaside, Oregon is supposed to be one of the top 10 beaches in the nation, however mie Seal Rocks, regon. It's very sheltered but windy most of the time. This is in the central coast 10 miles south of Newport

I like Cane Garden Bay in the Virgin Islands. Perfect crescent of white sand with gin-clear water. (You can get naked down near the rocks, too.)

Another vote for the Florida Panhandle. Seaside, Grayton Beach, and Seagrove beach have great little towns as well as beautiful beaches.

Also, Canon Beach in Oregon for a colder beach. Very scenic.

The best beach is Playa Del Carmen Mexico. Beautiful white sand and blue water. uncrowded, just 45 minutes south of crowded Cancun. Miles and miles of white sandy beaches - can't be beat!

Ummm I think the question was the best beaches in the US. I didn't know Mexico, St. Thomas etc. were in the US.
