We are going south from Michigan to Georgia next weekend. We are stopping in Nashville to spend Friday and Saturday night with our son. DH wants to go to a really good bar-b-que place to eat. DS has asked around but hasn't really received too many suggestions. Anyone know of a great place in Nashville for bar-b-que?

Nashville isn't as known for barbecue as Memphis is; I've been here almost six years and people just don't get as excited about it, which explains the lack of recommendations! The ones Neil listed are the main local places for Tennessee barbecue, along with Hog Heaven next to Centennial Park (no seating - most people eat in the park).

Judge Bean's in Brentwood is also supposed to be great, but it's more Texas-style. If that doesn't matter to you, any of them should be good.

I've only been to Whitt's and Jack's, and definitely preferred Whitt's.

I think Jack's is pretty good. They have much more variety than the others. Whitt's is pretty good, but it doesn't really compare to Jack's, in my opinion. I enjoyed Judge Beans when it was by the fairgrounds years ago, but I have no idea what the Brentwood location is like. It wasn't as good as Jack's or Whitt's. If you want to go out, Jack's is best. Whitt's is good for takeout. Jack's has much better sides.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I knew it wouldn't be like Memphis or even North Carolina. It sounds like Whitts or Jacks would be our best bet. I don't see Brunswick Stew on either of their menus, but I might not find that.

The only place I've seen Brunswick stew in town was the Blind Pig in 12 South, but I just Googled to get you the web site and apparently it closed.

I don't remember the sides at Whitt's, so Katie may be right on that. I actually was underwhelmed by the sides at Jack's - funny how different opinions can be! Jack's is convenient if you're going to be downtown - it's right behind Tootsie's.

jent--the plan is to eat dinner and then walk around downtown and listen to all the music coming out from the bars. DS is young enough to wait around and get in to them but DH and I are just looking forward to a walk to settle our dinner.

So unless our son has a better suggestion I think we might go with Jack's since it is downtown.

Actually DH made ribs tonight and his bar-b-que sauce was really good, I am not sure why he wants to go find something different.

If you don't mind a short drive S of Nashville just E of Franklin you will find that Martin's in Nolensville is outstanding.

I remember seeing Brunswick stew listed on BBQ menus in the Carolinas and Georgia. Not sure if it's found much outside of this area.

Have been to Jack's and liked the BBQ there. But like jent103 says, Nashville isn't the BBQ hotbed Memphis is.

I agree with the above. But if you want a truly memorable non-BBQ meal that's very unique to Nashville go to Monell's on 6th Ave. near the Farmer's Market, Capitol, and Bicentennial Mall (in the Germantown area). Family style; no menu but always includes their famous fried chicken and 2-3 meats, 3-4 salads, 4-5 hot vegetables, drink and dessert.

When ever I take visitors there it's their favorite place. (Not expensive, either.)

Thanks for all the recommendations. If only we had more time.

DS is going to cook for us Friday night, and he wants to take us to the Yazoo Brewing Company for beer, bread and cheese during the day Saturday. That only leaves us Saturday night to go out for dinner.

I think we will try Jack's since it is downtown, and we want to walk around after dinner. Since I am going to GA I can wait and get some Brunswick stew there.

Oh, Yazoo will be fun. Are you going to take the tour, or just go to the taproom? I took the tour in the old building (they just moved the brewery to the Gulch area - I haven't been in the new building, but have some friends who went a couple weekends ago). Just a heads up, they give you a pretty good amount of each beer to taste, so if you're a lightweight drinker (like me), you might walk around the Gulch for awhile after!

Thanks for the heads up, jent103. I am not sure if we are taking the tour or not, it sounds like it would be fun. I am not quite a lightweight with 'light' beers but if these are higher alcohol content we will definitely need to walk around.
