Bershires for the kids??
We are planning to go to the Bershires in August with 3 kids from 6 to 12 years old. They are ok with museums, music etc. for a little while but prefer action and adventure. What is there to do around there or within a 45 minute drive. Has anyone stayed at the Bently Brook Mountain Resort? I'd love to hear any info or suggestions.
Thanks alot.

Amy,
As a child growing up there, I spent my summers swimming and winters skiing, both to the exclusion of most all other activities, and it's a great area for both. Moved away after college, but for the next thirty years returned, first just husband and myself, then with our children for two weeks each summer to visit "Grandma and PopPop".
The kids grew to love it as much as I do, but in truth, it is very much an adult destination, with activities geared to adults, not youngsters.
There are a couple of areas for hiking, but with your 6 yr old, that would be difficult. You can drive to the top of Mt. Greylock, up county, and the kids will enjoy running around up there and even they will be impressed with the beautiful vistas into NY, VT, and NH on clear days. In south county, you can drive most of the way to Bash Bish Falls, then hike the rest of the way in...an easy groomed trail even your 6 year old would have no trouble with.
Mine enjoyed the grounds of Tanglewood, just getting out and running around there and you will too--the grounds are gorgeous. You may happen onto student rehersals in the daytime and that's short enough that the kids will be quite interested. We left them home with their grandparents though, when it came time for concerts.
They might enjoy the Hancock Shaker Museum...for a while anyway. Then there is a small bumper car/boat, miniature golf place in Lanesborough on Rte 7 if that sort of thing is to their liking (and yours)!
The Bird Sanctuary off of Rte 7 between Lenox and Pittsfield was always an enjoyable school trip for us. There are some animals, some trails...we used to love the outting but I haven't been in years so have no idea if it's still as neat as it was.
Hope you all enjoy it. It's a beautiful area, but very laid back and not at all what comes to mind when you think "action and adventure"! People love it for the beautiful surroundings, the music of Tanglewood, theater or art museums of Williamstown, or dance at Jacobs Pillow, and for the quaint towns (now far less quaint since its discovery), but it's never been known as a hotbed of activity.
