One night on a weekend (Columbus Day weekend, no less) during prime foliage season? Don't hold your breath. You could try some motel chains, but I very much doubt that you will have any luck with anything charming. Also, you should definitely call the properties directly, and not rely on a booking engine such as Expedia or the like, which I'm sure will require at least two nights.

Oh Geez, you are not only asking to stay one night but isn't that Columbus Day weekend?
In the area of Upstate NY, the Berkshires, anywhere you have trees that change colors, and a long weekend, you are going to have trouble finding a room for one night.
As a matter of fact, you will be finding it difficult to even get reservations soon for 2 or 3 nights!
Busloads of "leaf peepers" descend on those areas, loaded with cameras and ready to enjoy the beauty of the mountains.
If you are here in NYC, you can do it in one day, leave early-2 1/2 hours maybe 3 north and then come home after dinner, eat on the early side, be home around 9 or 10 pm.
Otherwise, you might have to go for the dollars and book 2 nights even if you plan to just stay one.
I am speaking from experience
Good luck~

Can you suggest the best drive to see the foilage? and a great romantic restaurant with excellent food in the area of the Berkshires?

We take the Taconic..takes 3 hours from door to door if you go to Great Barrington.
It is less and quite nice if you make Rhinebeck and that area your destination.
In Rhinebeck is a lovely small restaurant that we love, Le Petit Bistro.
In Great Barrington, are so many restaurants, many not worth much at all. Very touristy there. But there is a place called Verdura that is Tuscan, very good. My all time favorite is The Old Mill in South Egremont..it is an old mill ( who would have guessed?), very pretty inside, outstanding service, very comfortable ambience and the very best food! I wish I could just drive up for dinner! Do have the bread pudding for dessert. And sit by the window in the back so you can look out over the stream that was part of the mill and the deep dark woods in the back

you might actually have to count on a 3, not 2 night stay (friday, saturday and sunday night).
Most places in the Berkshires (even Hotel chains like holiday inn) require that all summer long (Tanglewood crowd can manage long weekends every week , I suppose) and Columbus day Weekend is also one of those holidays when 'nicer' places add the extra day to the minimum

If you dont find anyplace - it's worth some calling around last minute on the off chance you might be able to snag a night due to a cancellation (especially if the weather is less than fabulous) - we've had luck on several occasions finding the policy suddenly changes within a week of the date you want - not a foolproof plan, but you never know! We like the Weathervane Inn in South Egremont which is nice and close to all the cool restaurants in Great Barrington.

I honestly can't imagine a more difficult weekend to find a room let alone one for one night! If the weather looks bad, you are in luck..but then you probably don't want to be there either.
As unromantic as this is, your best shot might be at the one big box in the area, The Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield. I just checked their website and there is availability for 10-11-03, check out 10-12-03, at $209. I say unromantic--it is in the center of Pittsfield, right where Park Square is, if you know the area, but it's a decent hotel with some of the rooms facing south toward South Mountain and Bousquet Ski area. It has been there through various flags and renovations from the time I was little (ie, eons ago and forced to submit to ballroom dancing classes and cotillion there
) At least that saves you a trip back to the city and from the center of town it's an easy drive anywhere in Berkshire County. (Pittsfield always billed itself as the heart of the Berkshires, and it is about as close to the middle of things as you could get.) Good luck and have fun! I must say, I'm a little envious...wish I could go along!

This summer I stayed at the Paradise Motor Inn just over the Wiliamstown, MA border in Bennington VT. Their rates were half of what the motels in Williamstown were and they had a lot of rooms. It was a very nice motel, beautiful grounds. They have many different price rooms. Not sure if they will let you stay 1 night but worth the try.
