Benefits of living in IL:
Family, restaurants, food freshness and variety, transportation hub to everywhere, good schools available, great library systems.

Big negatives far over-balance:
Highest TAXES in the nation for totals-and in both state income and property combos in most counties- with property superlative per $$ evaluation now- highest.
Highest Electricity Costs
Highest Gasoline Prices with extra state tax and additives costs- so this occurs at all gas price levels.
Number 41 out of lower 48 for new business start ups and falling even lower by next year. Raping of business for community projects becoming a theme.
Most corrupt Democratic Party Machine and politicians from all parties in most ethics across the nation.
Reverse discrimation rampant which has inploded some public welfare and social systems.
Crime in cities near high in homicides for nation- highest for gang gunshot murders-35 and counting for 2007. Most are innocent by-standers. All the guns were illegal.
Defacto health care and transportation discrimation differentials in numerous counties quite obvious.
Health care well available but access can be horrendous.
Worst Govenor in the nation right now.
A Congress that can not pass a budget and is in a holding pattern release for bankruptcy right now.
Bail out to CTA/MTA Metra will fail soon with massive cutbacks in routes and jobs.
Weather is changeable and violent at times.
After promising never to cross into Bensonville or obscur the cemetaries for literally decades, they are now going to move the bodies out with force for a new O'Hare runway. Crooked methods, like the nightime bulldozers are coming again soon.

Family is here, and if they weren't and didn't need my efforts to live, I would out be out of here already.

Michigan is a poor state but does better for its working people.

North Carolina - Close to the Mts. (1 1/2 hrs), close to the beaches (from the bottom of OBX to Charleston (4 hours tops). Nice Airport (despite being held hostage by US Air). Reasonable prices on housing & such. No Winter to speak of (we had snow for exactly 12 hours last year) but if you want snow it's only a few hours away. Good economy & jobs (this applies more to the cities than necessarily some rural areas).

Your property taxes are higher if you have a view?

property taxes are based on market value of the property in many states...a home with a view is worth more than an identical home without one....

dmlove, although houses with a view have always been worth more, our new tax assessing clearly evaluates the view and anything else about the property. We've been calling it a view tax but were told that's not what it is. However, when the town was re-assessed recently, some home values increased dramatically ... because of their view. We thought our taxes were going to go down because so many others' went up because of things like views but ours still went up just not as much. If you have waterfront property the waterfront is also evaluated. If it's good swimming or good boating it's worth more than a swampy area that breeds mosquitoes (but it's still worth more than not having any water). Also, as happened in one NH town, you can be taxed for lake front even if your lake disappeared (dam broke).

Well, as someone in my business once stated "never underestimate the boundless ingenuity of the government in figuring out new ways to raise money".

California because it's the only state where you can go snowboard and hang out at the beach on the same day

amydelta, when you do figure out all of the benefits of living in Mississippi, keep it to yourself. That way there won't be as many people moving down here because it is truly a great place to live. The worst part about living in Mississippi is the perception that other people have of this state. Yes, we have problems--highest obesity rate, etc.--but so does every other state. People don't realize that Mississippi has overcome tremendous obstacles, some self-imposed,yes, but there are statistics that back up the progress made here. Sorry, I sound so defensive, but there are many great things about Mississippi. I'll leave it to anyone interested to google Mississippi writers or music and see a little bit about this states' great heritage. And don't forget the food--I guess that's why we have that #1 rating for obesity, but you can't deny the plethora of wonderful and distinct restaurants. Thanks for listening.

You can do that in Oregon too, smartcookie.
You just better wear a wet suit if you're going surfing.

You could do in in NC as well, but as bbq mentioned, a wet suit would be required as well.

I just moved to Charlotte, NC from the St. Louis area (southern Illinois) just about a year ago and here are my thoughts:

Pros:
-The weather is fantastic. People here complain about the humidity but compared to the midwest, well, there is no comparison. The skies are almost always blue, even during the winter months.

-As SAnParis said, we are just a few hours from the mountains and the beach. Again, compared to St. Louis, this is heaven for us. We love to hike and have been to the mountains many times already.

-The cost of living is still relatively low compared to many other places in the US. Our housing costs are actually slightly cheaper here than in St. Louis, and the taxes are less than half of what we were paying before.

-People are very friendly and welcoming. I guess because it seems like the majority of us living in Charlotte are transplants it just leads to a welcoming feeling overall.

Cons:
-The airport is ridiculously expensive to fly in and out of from many areas. I swear I can fly to Europe cheaper than I can fly home to St. Louis unless I come across a great deal.

-Lots of chain stores and restaurants everywhere. It took us awhile to find some of the local places to eat because when we first moved here and looked around it seemed like everything was a chain store or restaurant.

-Not a lot to do for tourists. Charlotte is definitely more of a live-not-visit city. When people visit us from out of state I warn them that there isn't a lot to do around here, although there are lots of great places within a short driving distance away.

I would go into the pros and cons of living in St. Louis but for me its home and I am still quite homesick for my family so, other than saying its a great place to live and visit (and vastly underrated) I'll leave that for someone else.
