I have to sheepishly admit, I'm with Kal even though I've lived in Oregon my whole life. I just don't seem to have the "roughing it" gene and this is really sad since Oregon is such a great state for camping and "roughing it" type activities....let's just say if I ever went on Survivor I'd vote myself off!
Cheers,
Tracey

I have lived in Oregon since 1991- before that I was a big city girl who shopped for entertainment.
you dont really have to rough it to enjoy the Oregon outdoors - I'm not into roughing it either - usually stay somewhere nice and then do outdoor activites from there.

I was just sorting through all my paperwork for our visit again this summer, and I found one outfitter that maybe of help to you. The company is called Central Oregon Adventures (www.coadventures.biz) and they have kayak trips available. We have used them for atv tours and they are excellent. Very knowledgeable, safety oreiented, but lots of fun. When they say a 4 hour trip, it means 4 hours of the actual adventure and does not include the driving time to and from. I hope this helps you in your planning.

With apologies to aquaholic, gotta give ya credit, kimamom. You take a lickin' and keep on tickin'. So, the 23 nights in the Portland/Oregon Coast area last summer were all in Astoria/Seaside/Cannon Beach? Or, are you not being truthful with the Chowhound poster either?
aquaholic, The guys may have to travel some to do whitewater kayaking, as it looks like Central Oregon Adventures does only flatwater trips (understandable given liability risk). Years ago we took a trip with Orange Torpedos, which operates out of the Grants Pass. Last time I checked, they did trips on the Rogue and N. Umpqua Rivers in inflatable one-man kayaks. Either would be quite a drive from Bend, but both are noted for some pretty good water.

I have stayed at the Inn of the Seventh Mountain but prefer Sun River because I like the bikepaths.
There is new place open in Bend that I have good reports on - its a McMenamins
called the Old Francis School - I'm going next month to try out. They are supposed to have beatiful Turkish baths
Kayaking out of Bend- havent done it but have rafted on the Deschutes River out of Bend - would imagine you can Kayak the same stretch of river-
also not far is the McKenzie River

Sunbum--My father stayed at the new McMenamins shortly after it opened this fall and enjoyed it.
Beachbum--Ah, you were smart and checked the website
I just saw it mentioned on my flyer but didn't read about it that it was flatwater. Will you be at Black Butte this summer? We may cross paths on a trail somewhere.

Aquaholic........I've done the Deschutes in a Kayak and in a raft. My daughter lives there so I visit. They race Sled dogs. I've also done the Sister's hike. What can I add? Have a good time, pack a little wine, maybe some cheese, fresh fruit and a Baquette! Next you'll be lured to the North Cascades...it's catching!

McMenamins?
McMenamins?
McMenamins?
Hahahaha...never been there but I love saying that name!!!
Especially in my best "Mike Meyers Father in 'So I Married An Axe Murderer" impression.
(I'd say in my best Mike Meyers F@t B@st@rd imitation but there is mixed Co. here!).
Tracey'PHX,
I ruffed it enuff when I was growing up.
I "did my time" in the Sierra, Nor and So Cal beaches and in Shadey Cove along the Rogue in the late 60s, early 70s....so it's a low class C'Yard for me from here on it!
I thought private cabin at Big Cedar Lodge in MO was roughing it, too.

What I remember most of the early 70s visits to Ore was all the courteous drivers driving by our van with the California plates and giving us the "Oregonian Salute". I felt like Dennis Hopper in Easy Rider on more than one occasion. C
Ms Scarlett,
Wadda 'bout "Scarlettnicebum"?

mms, Yep, we'll be in Black Butte for a week, beginning July 16(?). Since it's been a few years, I'd like to do the Canyon Creek Meadows hike again, but it's hard to talk the rest of the family into anything more strenuous. So, we'll probably end up doing a walk along the Metolius, and/or maybe a few easy mountain-biking trails, including Paulina Plunge (thanks again, sunburn).

Wow Beachbum, we arrive at Sunriver on the 18th for a week. Its almost scary how much we think alike, lol! I know what you mean about getting the other family to join in on some outings. Our immediate family is fine, but getting some of the others to do a real hike will never happen. They will ride bikes on the paths or up to Benham Falls, but otherwise they like to relax. Some did say they want us to take them out though, so I am looking forward to showing them a whole new world.

Scarlett- If you moved here you would definately have to become a Scarlett bum-
I must admit- I have done a lot more outdoorsy things since moving to Oregon than I ever imagined I would - and I love it.
The biggest stretch was climbing the South Sister - but it was great in retrospect!
Last weekend I was at Odell Lake snowshoeing - fun also - not much snow though!
