Bellagio or Wynn?

I'm planning a visit to the US (from the UK) ending with a few days in Las Vegas (the latest of several visits over 10 years). We were planning on staying at the Bellagio but a niece has just returned from staying there and says standards have definitely slipped and recommends the Wynn, although she only visited the casino.

Trip Advisor shows mixed reviews for both (and I am allowing for teething problems at the Wynn). Any comments from Fodorites?

"Trip Advisor shows mixed reviews for both"

Bellagio is ranked as the #6 property in Vegas out of 243, not really mixed reviews. Wynn is ranked #52, so if you are basing your decision on Tripadvisor, it's Bellagio hands down. Personally we love the Bellagio and you can't beat the central location on the strip. I'd stay at the Bellagio and visit Wynn. Wynn probably needs 6 more months to work out the "bugs" and the location is okay at best. Try for a fountain view, it's worth the extra $.

As one LV resident my suggestion would be for the Bellagio. Wynn is very "Willy Wonka"-ish. It is beautiful and grand and all, though it just seems as though Wynn tried too hard this time. Definitely worth a visit though, and the Wynn's prices for dining and/or drinks are way overpriced. Bellagio is more homey and classy and opulent but not over done. The Bellagio just flows much better and is a nicer property imo.

How many "LV Residents" do you know who actually STAY in these places vs. moseying in and looking around and then deciding which hotel is best????

Are you having a bad day today Intrepid? Judging by today's posts.....

I have stayed in the Bellagio and my post is the general concensus of the people that live in LV, as well as A family friend that works as a dealer at the Wynn. That is my .02, and thanks for the personal attack, which you seem to spend a lot of time doing. I suppose you know a lot better about the subject, right?

I also agree with the Bellagio. It is lovely..you will n ot be disappointed. We like to stay at the Bellagio, but visit other hotels and we are always glad we stay there. We are returnining next month to the Bellagio third time in a year, but we will visit the Wynn.

I would think a LV resident really has the best opinion of the hotels, as most LV residents work in the hotels or know someone that does. If I lived in LV I would stay in the hotels.....it would like living in NYC and not going to the theatre.

Thanks for your kind comments Annibel. What the rude poster doesn't realize is that my spouse speaks formally at many LV hotels in his business and we get many comped hotel accomodations as well as paid for dinners at many of the town's finest restaurants, not to mention when we enjoy them on our own. We also take little mini vacations at hotels on the strip - always a fun place to people watch It's actually quite foolish to imply that a person that lives in a particular city knows nothing about their own town Regardless, thanks for your kind words.

hi, travelwifey! I haven't stayed at Bellagio yet, and am very partial to rooms at the Venetian myself ! I wonder if Wynn can match those rooms!

They look pretty nice from the website and I think there have been one or two posts about the rooms that they are amazing but the posters had problems with luggage delivery. That may have been fixed by now though. The threads can probably be pulled up by the infamous text search feature

Thanks very much for the replies. Looks like the Bellagio has it. Of course it's main advantage is its location.

This site is just great!

I would say Bellagio also! I'll post a link for their current special of $149 for a room overlooking the fountains. I'm heading there in 2 weeks. Love the bed/fountains/bathrooms/service/casino.

Although I have not stayed at the Wynn, too many sites have comments about the poor service at this time. Seems as though many feel "give it a year" in order to have the dust settle and service will maybe increase to an acceptable level of prices charged.

Maybe a little off the subject, but I'm curious. There have been numerous posts about the problems at Wynn and the "bugs needing to be worked out". I don't remember such posts when the Bellagio opened. Didn't it open rather successfully by comparison --to almost unanimous and immediate raves? Why all the problems at Wynn?

Sandimac-

Steve Wynn( the owner of Wynn's) was the original owner of the Bellagio...

we LOVE the Bellagio- but make sure you get a room facing the dancing waters...

typical rooms are done in monotone of light beige with light wood furniture-
VERY elegant by Vegas standards-ie. no garish colors, no mirrors on ceiling etc.

Bathrooms are all marble- and include a shower AND a bathtub...

Room service is FABULOUS! and sometimes cheaper than the coffee shop.

The pool area is very elegant--try having breakfast out there if you are going summer, fall or spring.

DO NOT go to Le Cirque restaurant in the hotel as it is OVERPRICED and for the money, has AWFUL service. ie our appetizers were forgotten for 2 out of 8 people...no one asked if we wanted wine or drinks--desserts arrived in unevenlly timing-- ie. 2 people waited a long time for there dessserts. No second cup of coffee --etc etc etc all for the grand price of $250 per couple..

( I had eaten at Le Cirque 3 years ago and they did NOT have this problem--but a lot changes in 3 years.

One of the best restaurants we went to was Rosemary's which is chef owned and operated and is OFF the strip..fixxed price-$35 pp plus tip tax and wine.

Have fun!

Regarding Wynn's opening, I read a comment by Steve Wynn where he ruefully said that if he could do the opening over, he wouldn't it the same way. Sounds like he took a gamble and lost regarding a 'hard' vs. 'soft' opening.

We're looking at Vegas room rates for July and I was amazed at how 'reasonable' Wynn was, considering it's new and supposedly fabulous. We're staying at Mandalay Bay (for various reasons) but I'd still like to stay at Wynn someday.

One of the issues surrounding the opening date was that Wynn wanted to open on the date of his wife's birthday. So, at 1 minute past midnight, the hotel was opened for business.

Many concessions were made in order to meet this target date and there are some million dollar tweaks and fine-tuning Steve Wynn has been quoted as saying "are in the works".

I personally liked Mirage's suite rooms (one of Steve Wynn's former properties) better than Bellagio, but the pool at Bellagio is great! We also loved The Venetian's rooms and the shops with the gondola's, but lobby even though awesome, is a little on the "darker" side for a hotel. I agree with other post, stay at Bellagio, and visit Wynn. It's too new yet for fair reviews. Have fun!

I just stayed at the Bellagio this past weekend. Next weekend, I'll be staying at the Wynn. I'll let everyone know how the two compare. I loved the Bellagio, although I didn't find the bed to be all that great-or the pillows. We stayed in the spa tower. The room was just beautiful. I left there feeling so relaxed. For a first time visit, I would recommend the Bellagio mainly for the great location.
