Any recommendations for a nice place to rent a cottage where we would be able to walk to the beach -a great beach.....???... Do not want the hustle and bustle of Newport area but not very familiar with the rest of the coats. Is there a nice beach in Little Compton?
What about down towards the CT border?

You might want to repost with "Rhode Island" in your title to get more responses. Little Compton's beaches are pretty rocky. You might try Westport in MA, or Narragansett going towards CT.

Does it have to be Rhode Island? Or even northern US? How about Pompano Beach in Florida? It's right smack in the middle between Boca, Delray Beach and Palm Beach to the North, and Ft. Lauderdale and Miami Beach to the South. The woman from whom we rented a condo before we moved down here, now has 6 small properties which she rents by the week or even for 3 days at a time after April. One of her properties is called Cottages by the Ocean and sounds like the kind of thing you want. All the comforts of home, a screened front porch, great yard and only a block and a half from the beach--with all the gear you'll need to spend the day on the beach. If you don't mind driving or flying down here, this is a great place to spend some time right now. It's not yet super hot and prices are way down from what they are during peak winter season. Enjoy.

I would suggest Watch Hill or Wekapaug in Westerly RI or even something in Charlestown RI.

I've always thought that the Rhode Island beaches along that area are a little nicer than the ct beaches. Watch Hill, RI is beautiful.naragansett is nice too. In CT, groton long point, westbrook, clinton and madison are nice.
