Caveat: I have not been here and have not tried any of these places.

Salt Lick is a well-known BBQ spot not that far outside of Austin. Have seen mixed reports on the place over at Chowhound, for what it's worth.

You're also not much of a drive from Lockhart, TX, which has three generally well-regarded BBQ places -- Black's, Kreutz, and Smitty's, plus Chisholm Trail (this last gets less love at Chowhound than the other three).

My favorite is Rudy's (with a D, not a B). There aren't any downtown locations, just the 3 or 4 scattered around the outskirts.

We ended up using County Line at our party, excellent food and we were very happy. Also ate for fun at Rudy's which was excellent! Thanks for the suggestions.
