Barrow,AK

We are traveling to Alaska in the middle of June. We were thinking of traveling to Barrow for the day. Does anyone know of reasonable flights from Anchorage? Are there any tours to see the polar bears at that time? Is it worthwhile to visit Barrow?

Not intending to sound flippant here, but...Are you a troll? Have you looked at a map of Alaska? If you are not a troll, and have not looked at an Alaska map, please do so. Alaska is extremely large! Barrow is not a day trip from Anchorage.

Margaret, the poster clearly asked about flights. Have YOU looked at a map of Alaska? How many hours do you think it takes to fly from Anchorage to Barrow?

floridagetawaygal, we didn't do Barrow. Everyone I knew suggested it wasn't worth it, so we never even explored the possibility. I know that Alaska airlines does pretty frequent flights between the two, but the prices are very high for the distance.

Yes, you can do a day trip to Barrow (of course, in the middle of June a "day" in Barrow is around 4 months long ). However, an overnight (or 2) is much better. Alaska Airlines has several arctic excursions with okay prices - Barrow, Kotzebue, Nome (not technically in the arctic but an interesting historic town). Start here - http://www.alaskaairalaska.com/triptypes/arctic.html

Polar bears in June? No. Interesting? Yes. Worth the money? You choose, but when will you get close again?

Perhaps a scenic flight out of Homer to Hallo Bay for brown bears.. act fast though if you consider this option, since they are booked well in advance.. good luck, J.

Although offered, there are day tours to Barrow. I would not consider it myself, I spent 4 days/3 nights there with a private guide. It is costly, and I was glad I brough up a small grocery store from Fairbanks.
