I recently spent a week by myself in Baltimore while attending a training. I did not do a lot of running around after dark, but had a great time and felt safe whether on Metro, walking, or driving. I have stayed near Inner Harbor, usually lots of tourists and activity even late, esp if Orioles are playing. Also the Fell's Point area is busy into the evening, lots of bars & fun stuff, water taxi runs from Inner Harbor to Fell's Point. This last trip I stayed near Symphony Hall at Abacrombie Badger B&B (they have web site) close to Charles Street with lots of neat restaurants. Go to Club Charles on Friday night, you might see the director John Waters there! Crime rate is high, but mostly in certain parts of town - so be alert, don't carry a purse, ask locals or hotel staff what areas to avoid. The Metro & light rail system is very clean & efficient, I enjoyed taking it.

have lived in "charm city" for 14 years - -it is like any other city - - stay where there are lots of lights -take taxis if it's late, and you'll be smart. The major business hotels are all near each other and you'll be fine-- go to McCormick & Schmick's for dinner -- on the water - - or Victor's Cafe for the best view of this great city!!!!!! Have fun and be sensible and you'll be fine. Take in an Orioles game too- the stadium is one of the best around.
