Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, Williamsburg, VA/Virginia Beach, Boston/Cape Cod, NYC/the Hamptons, San Francisco/Big Sur, all have the combination of musts you list.

If you're looking for something a little warmer than emalloy's list - try Maui. My wife and I are headed there in late May.
If you want to stick to the east, head for Key West. There is plenty of history, good food and beach there.

Look into Pensacola Beach. Beautiful beaches, lots of historic sites, and great food.

From where? Fly or drive? Budget?

(curious -- you tagged this for Alaska, Arizona and Alabama . . . are those places you are actually considering or was it just confusion using the site? )

Not much in the way of beaches on Key West, just so you know.

Smathers beach, Higgs beach and dog beach are all sandy beaches and nice.

Fort Zachery is nice, rocky but nice. We always go to the Navy beach next to FZ and the rocks don't bother me. Just get some beach shoes. Cole's peace bakery is great for picnic food.

The beaches in Key West aren't the sink your toes in the white sand kind, but they're still nice, and couple that with how much fun Key West is and you're sure to have a great time.
