B@B question

We have never stayed in a B@B and will be doing it for the first time in our trip later this month.
Family of 2 adults and 3 kids.

We are booked at:

Pioneer Inn - Wasilla
White Swan Inn - Seward
A Home Away from Home - Homer

any reviews on the above??

Also can you suggest some B@B for acouple of nights each in Anchorage, Valdez, Copper Center/GlenAllen area?

Also this may sound silly but can you tell us if B&B usually provide bath towels, soap etc..

I can only answer the silly question, and yes, they do provide towels and soap.

And I was kidding, it's not a silly question if you've never stayed at a B&B.

Hi! We just returned today from 10 days in Alaska. We divided our time between Homer and Seward. We stayed in B&B's both places. The first one in Homer was The Beach House B&B. The view to the beach was great. They provided towels, soap, hair dryer and cleaned our room every day.We had yogurt, juice, fresh fruit, cereal and a bread of some sort.. it was around $160.00 and the people were nice, it just wasn't exactly what I had in mind. DH chose the trophy room, so you can just imagine. I am a museum person and the Pratt didn't interest me at all. Homer was all about fishing. We did go to the galleries and look around.I don't think I am a collecter of Alaskan art. I can appreciate it, but, it doesn't fit our southern lifestyle. In Seward, we stayed in Lowell Point at a B&B called the Alaska Beach house, I think. A great view, better weather. In each place a microwave, small ref. and coffee pot was in each room. I liked Seward much better, maybe because the sun was out. We did take a 6 hour boat ride. Long enough. These were the only two towns that we visited, other than points in between. We did fish right in front of the Seward B&B. It was new and very clean, with wood floors. Sorry this is so disjointed,We had to come through the airport in Atlanta this A.M., and it was a nightmare! Have a great time. Your trip sounds ambitious. We did hike the Exit glacier, and did several boat trips, but, well, I guess I'm just tired P.S. We are in our fifties and my DH is an outdoor guy and he loved the entire trip. Even with only those two towns, I gotta tell, it's a lot of car time with kids!

With 5 people, you likely are going to need at least 2 rooms??? B&B's can be limited to adults, so be certain to consider that if the children are under 10??

I stay at B&B's all the time in Alaska, only had one bad one- in Seward.

All provide basics, towels and soap.

So I would look at family friendly places with set ups for 2 close by rooms and perhaps, small enough for you to be the only visitors??

In Anchorage the Teddy Bear House has 2 rooms next to each other with a shared bath, wonderful host too. Copper Center has very limited lodging, I suggest the Copper Center Roadhouse. Valdez, Look at 2 rooms at Brookside- she has 2 small children.

Seward- the Holiday Inn may be a good option here? The B&B's I stay at are not kid friendly.

Valdez area - http://www.alaska.net/~chalet/index.html

The website says it's still available August 21-31.

It's a cabin, not a B & B, but oh, what a great location!

I think that was a good question to ask. B&Bs range in what they offer. We've stayed in a large room over the garage in Seward with a bagel and juice for breakfast to a wonderful place in Palmer that was designed to be a professional B&B (Alaska Garden Gate) with several rooms. We opted for one of the largest with a private bath, separate entrance, and mini kitchen. Breakfasts there are cooked and hearty. Also had a huge livingroom for the guests to mingle and breakfasts were served family style. We also stayed at a B&B in Whittier that was more like a studio apartment. So, expect a coffee maker and small fridge at the very least but I would also ask what they serve for breakfast, if you have any cooking facilities, and if there is a public room where you can socialize with other guests. Frankly, I think a bagel for breakfast is not sufficient esp if you can't toast it and there's no peanut butter (for my husband who hates bagels). If you know what you have for cooking facilities and know what will be served (or not served) you might want to supplement with cereal and fresh fruit. BTW we were in the habit of carrying a case of bottled water in the car. Not all places will have a mini fridge which you will need to know if you want milk and cereal for the kids. I like B&Bs where you can socialize with the other guests and the host(s). You might want to ask if there is a tv with reception. We had a tv in Whittier but no reception but they did provide a stack of videos. We don't normally watch tv while on vacation but you will want to see the weather reports and local news. If the B&B is too basic (like the room over the garage in Seward we had) I think you might as well stay at a hotel. Also check to see if they take checks and/or credit cards. But yes, they all should have soap and towels! On our first visit to Seward we stayed in an inexpensive hotel almost in downtown and I really liked the location since we could walk to restaurants. Hope you have a great time!
