Avon, NC
This is our first time to the Outer Banks. We are going the end of June. All 3 families have decided/agreed on staying in Avon as we were concerned with too cold of water in the northern beaches. My questions are is there lifeguards there or roving ATVs? Also, will the water temperature be warm in June? Are the beaches nice? We go to the beach for the beach. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Don't expect to see any lifeguards; you may see an occasional National Park ranger tooling by in a jeep or something similar.
We usually take a place farther down (Hatteras Village) but I suspect you won't have too much trouble with water temperature at the end of June.
Believe me, at Avon the whole thing IS about the beach although they finally got a movie theatre a couple of years ago. Of course, there is plenty of opportunity to imbibe and lurk in the Food Lion!
Yes, IMO, the beach is quite nice. The number of people will depend in some great degree on the number of people also renting during the same timeframe.

We have stayed in Avon and Buxton (6 miles south) for over 15 years and love it. It is a family beach and the water and waves are wonderful--there is enough surf action for fun, but not enough to feel scary. While you are there, if you want a GREAT dinner out, go to the end of the island (Hatteras Village) and eat at the Austin Creek Grill.

Unfortunately, I believe that ATVs are possible on the beach in that area. (I thought that because I've seen them down there at all times of the year that I've been there.)
Here is the online info I found:
http://www.outer-banks.nc.us/newsinfo/randr.htm
There won't be tons of them though!
Water temp is almost impossible to predict, as it is highly changeable along that whole shore, dues to wind, currents, etc. In general, I think it's pretty brisk to swim in June (but kids probably won't care.)
I do not think there are lifeguards at the Avon beaches.
It is beautiful down there. Be sure to bring some binoculars. The birds are amazing.
