Well clearly I don't live there so I can't comment on what havoc these books have caused or not caused. I have heard stories about your governor doing little to preserve the environment after making a boatload of promises before she entered office. And yes ?heretodaygonetomorrow? you should want what it takes to protect your land, your island. It is that kind of thinking, ?only so much we can expect? that keeps commercial interest over yours, in my opinion. Maui Revealed does represent commercial interest but what I have seen Hawaii state government protect is the larger interest of tourism and investors (builders). You are just seeing one example of that with this book.

You don?t like your privacy being trampled on by these books, it sounds like there needs to be a class action law suit. ??.only so much we can expect? is what the authors and Hawaii state government are counting on.

Sarah, I don't understand what you are trying to say. You are mixing apples and oranges. When I say there is only so much we can expect from local, state or federal government, it is in reference to the problems of trespassing and ignorance of visitors. I have no idea how I can expect any government body in ths US to begin to regulate individual behavior in regards to whether or not one chooses to heed warnings, climb over locked gates, or swim in dangerous places. They can, and do post warnings, but you can make people obey them. I can call the police when someone is trespassing, but in the grand scope of things, trespassing takes a back seat to real emergencies. Hana has three policemen. Are they to spend all of their time monitoring to see if there are rentals cars parked on private property?

I don't know where you live, but I can pretty much guarrantee that controlling the behavior of individuals who might trespass or litter on private property does not fall under the jurisdiction of your governor's office. And while I am not a huge Lingle supporter, in all fairness, the "larger interest of tourism and investors (builders)" of which you speak comes more under the county than the state. Lingle did more damage to Maui county as mayor than she can do as governor. I've heard that to explain (jokingly, of course) why so many Maui residents voted her into the governor's office, to get her out of county government.

Yes, Hawaii has problems with balancing commercial and environmental interests. I think it is safe to say the same issues exist in nearly every state in the union today. We certainly know this is an issue with the federal government. Lingle's record as mayor of Maui is public record, and anyone who thought she would change once she was elected governor was dreaming. But this is a different issue altogether, and unless the governors office sees fit to ban all copies of Wizard Publications and start providing increased manpower to track down and remove trespassers from the sites in the book, I stand by my original statement that there is only so much was can expect the government to do in regards to the advice dispensed by the these books.

Sarah - Regarding this same subject: I've said this to you before and I'll say it to you again.

On June 4th:
"You said that "the government has to take responsiblity for the preservation of the land... and that its the government's responsibility to regulate this sort of thing."
FYI Sarah: Big Brother is Not alive and well in Hawaii.
Here_today_gone_2Maui said it better than I did: Hawaii doesn't have the resources or the financial wherewithall to constantly patrol these areas. And just how many signs do you suggest the government should post? A hundred, a thousand? How about armed guards at all the places where people trespass? (of course I'm being facetious.) Your beloved "Blue Bible" seems to encourage them to ignore these warnings...so how many signs will it take for people to notice? In neon lights??? Maybe if we put up billboards???...oooh, try wait, that's illegal in Hawaii.

And, one more time: when did ordinary people stop taking responsibility for their own actions??

So, while you (Sarah) complained on June 4th (and are still complaining now) that Hawaii does not protect Hawaii, it's still rather obvious to me that the Revealed books don't do much to protect Hawaii either...And do you honestly believe that the authors of the Revealed books are in the travel writing business strictly to share their knowledge of Hawaii? If that was the case, they'd publish their information free, on-line, rather than making money by selling all these books.

Maybe the authors should share the profits from the sale of their books to buy the signs you'd like, and also pay the people to patrol the watershed lands and the private property that's been trashed because of their suggestions...

Now, we all know that's not going to happen. But apparently you don't know that your suggestion is never going to happen either, because it just isn't feasible.

I still think you have to resolve your issues legally. If government can deter Most people from coming within 50 feet of some marine life they can keep MORE people off your land. Maybe it will involve this book, maybe it won't. Bottom line, you and others in your community have to be angry enough to be part of the process.

And that's all folks, good luck!!!

Just came across this thread. As lcuy
said, I'm also somewhat dreading the release of the Oahu version. The nice thing about it, I'm sure the book will point out all the wonderous, gorgeous lesser known sights that fans of Oahu know of (places that I'm still discovering with each new trip), and in turn, because the "Blue Bible" authors tell them about it, many of the Oahu "haters" will probably change there opinion about the island. But with the book, I'm worried that lesser known places that I've found out about on these boards just won't be as magical once readers start flocking to them. I'm worried that areas like the little trail through the woods to the spot where Honu lounge and swim on a North Shore beach will be littered with trash & cigarettes, and that the Honu won't be there next time because tourists did not respect their space and keep their distance. I'm worried that the next time I visit Oahu, some of the hidden beauty, won't be hidden and the beauty may be wearing thin. Is that selfish?

Hopefully those who read the book will remember the golden rule and give the island it's well deserved respect. Because of all the raves here, I bought my first Revealed book for Kauai (I'll be able to judge how accurate it is after my trip next month). I doubt I'll get the Oahu one because I think the Driving and Discovering book does a great job as a travel book without giving so many opinions, but rather sticks with more unbiased info, maps and facts.
