Asian restaurants. in Monterey Park, Ca
I read that "China Town" in downtown Los Angeles has been moved to the east around Montery Park, Alhambra area. Is this area drivable if we are staying in Pasadena? Any good suggestions? Thanks. We will be there in two weeks.

We were just in Pasadena a few weeks ago. Montery Park is only about a 20 minute drive from Pasadena. We took the streets too. There is a really popular Dim Sum place that we tried to go to on New Years Day. I don't remember the name of it...but I think it has the word "seafood" in it. We ended up not eatting there because the wait was an hour and half. You have to go up a fligt of stairs to get to the restaurant.

I think Rowland Heights, CA ranks right up there with Monterey Park as far as being the new LA Chinatown. There are tons and tons of Chinese Restaurants and lots of Korean Restaurants too. They all seem pretty busy. The Area is all around Colima Rd from Fullerton Rd to Fairway with the greatest concentration being between Fullerton Rd. and Nogales.

Monterey Park has lots of good Chinese restaurants up and down, Garfield, Atlantic, Garvey and Valley Boulvards. It's hard to find a bad dim sum place.
I favorites are Mon Kee and Hu's.
Mon Kee was the first Hong Kong style seafood restaurant in LA. It has lots of traditional non seafood cantonese food, but their specialty is seafood. Their shrimp with spicy salt is to die for. Great lobster and carb dishes.
Hu's is Nothern Chinese. Bring your own wine. Bring your own wine to Mon Kees if you're picky.
Mon Kee is in downtown and Hu's is on the Westside.

So Many to choose from! The Fragrant Vegetable on Garfield in MP, ABC (downtown) and NBC (Monterey Park) Seafood are both good. Our favorite when we lived in Pasadena was Harbor Village on Atlantic Blvd. in Monterey Park. An enormous place with great dim sum--you need to know a bit about dim sum though since most servers speak very little English. There was also Ocean Seafood, Ocean Star Seafood and Harbor seafood, so don't know which one you were thinking of. As other poster stated--it's very hard to go wrong at any of them. Places in Chinatown are Mon Kee and Plum Tree Inn, but I think the food's better and the restaurants more inviting in Monterey Park. From Pasadena just head downhill on Garfield Avenue, cross Huntington and continue until you start seeing restaurants--15 minutes or so. No need for freeway.

L.A.'s Chinatown hasn't moved.Montery Park is home to an unbelievable number of great Asian restaurants, including Vietnamese and Korean. Seafood seems to be the most popular.L.A.'s Chinatown has many dining choices as well and is more compact. Both are easily reached from Pasadena. Not to be forgotten is Garden Grove's Little Saigon with extensive Vietnamese shopping and dining.
