Aruba
I am thinking about a trip to Aruba. Would love to hear your comments and suggestions. What's the best time of year to go? Probably would book some kind of package deal. Any good/bad experiences with any particular companies?
Thanks!

I've been to Aruba twice and loved it. The weather is beautiful all year round, and its out of the hurricane belt so you don't have to worry about bad weather ruining your trip. Both times I went was in June, off-season, but I think anytime you go would be fine. We stayed at the Divi, all inclusive, great food, casual atmosphere, lots of fun. Jeep tour is a lot of fun, mi dushi or the jolly pirate ships, casinos, and of course the beaches! Everyone I know that has gone to Aruba loved it!

Just a word of caution. Aruba has refineries for Venezuelan oil. The recent crisis has had an impact on the island's economy. I have heard one second hand report of a tourist being hassled and robbed by soldiers. Reportedly, they are jealous of our wealth. Again, this is second hand (a friend of my boss) I would do a little research. As one poster suggested, go over to the Carribbean board.

Well, this is also second-hand information, from the CIA World Factbook website, updated Dec. 2002: Aruba's poverty rate is zero, their unemployment is 0.6%; their per capita income puts them among the higest in the world ($28,000), of the 70,000 inhabitants, the literacy rate is 97% (life expectancy, etc. are similalry impressive) All this puts them ahead of the USA so I don't think "they're jealous of our wealth." In fact, one thing I liked when visiting Aruba was that everybody seemed very well off.

The only clue I saw as to what was going on in Venezuela were the tankers lined up off the coast of Venezuela but this was way way in the distance. All of the Arubians I encountered were very nice people. The police have a beach patrol that do nothing but patrol the beaches 24/7 to ward off crime.

I went to Aruba in September. I have to say that the island is beautiful. I stayed at the Renaissance Beach Resort. I did have a good time there and there was definitely many things to do in our resort, but I don't think that I would stay there again. Next time I go back, I'll be at the Hyatt!!!
While you're there, eat at L'Escale. The restaurant is in the Renaissance and its delicious. A bit pricey though.

I booked through American Airlines vacations and got a fairly good deal. We stayed at the Wyndham and loved it. Aruba is very clean, very safe and its people are very nice. You will enjoy yourself. As a bonus,Aruba gets their meat from South America--they have the best steaks in the Caribbean!

grammo2 - Hi we have been going to Aruba for the past 6 years and love it.
We stay at the Marriott - the water and beach are great. Lots of great places to eat. The only surprise I had in Aruba was the wind - when you are on the beach it is usually windy -bad for contact lens. Have fun!

Aruba is great! the winds are bad and if you are prone to burning in the sun, lay out between 9am-11 am-- after that hit the shade areas or you will fry like a lobster....
Since you are below the Equator, the temps are SUPER hot from April to Dec...
The high season in Aruba is Dec.- April..so if you want to good weather and lower prices, but NOT oppressive heat----Try booking in MAY....
Also Aruba is below the hurricaine line, so it does not get hit by the hurricaines...
Hyatt and Marriott are great--
The beaches are white sand and the trees all look bent over to one side, hence the name Divi Divi trees.
The people are a combo of black and dutch and are super friendly...
Nitelife is good , if you like Casinos-
A lot of the lounge acts are imported from London....
We had NO bad experiences at all...there is a great restaurant in an Windmill that has wonderful dutch food.
