Arizona/Utah

Does anyone know what type of road #89 going from Flagstaff north into Utah is like? Is it relatively easy to drive on? Thanks!

I have driven it a couple of times.
It is desert country, sparsely populated as you might expect. The road is mainly two lane. As far as Cameron you can get heavy traffic because of the number of people going to the South Rim.

On weekends you see quite a few boats being towed to and from Lake Powell. I know it may seem strange to see a line of trucks pulling boats in the middle of the desert, but Powell has extensive boating facilities, and it just about has a monopoly on lake water in that part of Arizona.

You do need good two lane passing skills to drive the route effectively and I suggest you have something along to drink that is not a diuretic, which rules out coffee and cokes because of the caffeine.

Brookwood, hope this is getting to you, thanks so much, you've told me exactly what I need to know --- based on what you said, perhaps I will change my plans
for the trip and go from Flagstaff west and up to St. George and over. Thanks!

You should have no problem driving 89. People from the east sometimes get freaked out about driving in the west but it is no big deal. You are more likely to feel that you are alone in the middle of nowhere than worrying about traffic

Delawarean,

What changed your mind? Where in Utah were you headed?

We've done this route many times and it's a beautiful drive.

You didn't say where in Utah was your destination. If you are going from Flagstaff to Saint George, then it's a little farther to go via I-40, Hwy 93 & I-15 ((375 miles) vs Hwy 89 but time wise both will be about 6 1/2 hours....depending on the traffic in Las Vegas. If your destination is Zion National Park then going thought Las Vegas will cost you two more hours of driving and will be 160+ miles longer.

Hwy 89 is a lot more scenic than I-15 & I-40 and is very easy to drive. It's a wide two lane road. There are some windy places before you reach Page, AZ....but the VIEWS! WOW!!!!
