Arches NP - Wall Arch Falls

Just saw on the news that Wall Arch fell. This is not to far from the trail to Landscape Arch. You passed under Wall Arch on the trail. Get to Arches and see Landscape before it goes.

Had to get my map back out to refresh my memory. Wall Arch was on the trail after Landscape. I have a picture standing under it. I think going under the arch was part of the trail, if I am remembering correctly. Article on yahoo says it was the 12th largest arch in the park. I know it is just part of nature, but still seems sad when something of that magnitude is no longer.

It's an amazing process, one we rarely see happening. But all of a sudden, one day.....During the years I've been visiting Arches, Skyline Arch and Landscape Arch have doubled their span, size (whatever you want to call it) when big chunks have fallen out. That's how they are made, after all, and that's how they end.

Visitors used to be able to walk up under Landscape Arch before. Now it's too risky and they have made the barrier fence far enough away for safety. Did you see the pictures of when Landscape enlarged? Glad I wasn't underneath when it happened!

Wow, that is big news for fans of the park. I've been there four times over the last 15 years and have walked the Devil's Garden Trail each time. Very good thing it happened at night because there could have been considerable casualities during the day. That event does bring home the awesome power of nature. At least there are still plenty of arches left to see there!

Well, crud. We spent yesterday afternoon beginning to plan our vacation for next September - Arches NP among the places on the list. Mother Nature at work!

I would imagine they would have the trail cleared by Sept. You can still see Landscape even if they don't have the trail totally opened. The trails name is "Devils Garden Trail". It is about 7 miles long with not much elevation gain or loss. The last couple of miles is a little difficult because it is in sand. We did it in less than 4 hours. You can see about 8 major Arches on this trail. This is a very good trail with plenty to see and keep you occupied most of the way thru. The last 30 minutes is a little boring but the rest is really good. Do take a lot of water. Definately hike to Delicate Arch, Double Arch, Balanced Rock.
Don't confuse Double Arch with Double O Arch. Both are good.
My all time favorite thing in any National Park that I have been to is "Canyoneering" with deserthighlights.com. if you want more info on that I can give you some details. Did you mean Sept 08 or 09?

If I remember correctly, the trail doesn't really go under Wall Arch though I think it was possible to go under it.

From my photos.

Pic of my daughter. I could have sworn we went under it as part of the trail. But I just can't remember.

I had to admit that I am wrong, but I think Meyer is correct. I think you could go under the arch, but i think the trail was probably in the front.
