This is usually sold out by 1pm...we're learning to eat lunch earlier now!

For new Fodorites wondering "what the heck is it about Pono Market chicken???" -- it's boneless, marinated in teriyaki, and then fried. Yummmmmmmmmmmmy!

Salivating now...

After reading this I really want to try Pono Market's fried chicken. Sounds yummy...I'm thinking stop in on our way North after we arrive. Our flight comes in at 1:00 on a Thursday. Do you think they'd be all sold by then?
I can't stop thinking about all the wonderful food we get to eat on Kauai. Also I'm on a pre-trip diet, so I'm starved! Hmmm...fried chicken.

Pono Market is usually sold out of all their plate lunch stuffs by 1-1:30 (closed on Sunday). Island folks start picking up lunches from all the take-out places at about 11a.m. (!!)

Hmmm...I've never had Korean chicken, so I can't compare.

Those little yummy morsels they sell at Pono Market (by the cash register) is/are manju -- like bites of pie, right? My fav is the apple -- and it's always the first to sell out.

Thanks Auntie, I guess we'll have to make a special trip back to Kapa'a than. Is it worth it? We move from the North to the South on a Sunday so that's out.
Is Hamura's open on Sunday?
Is there another place similar to the Pono Market on the way to the Northshore?
I know my family will be starved after nothing but Hawaiian Airlines food.

glimmer, Hamura's is open on Sunday, but I don't believe they have lilikoi pie on Sunday. Or, maybe the time I went on Sunday they were just sold out.

We leave for Kauai on June 14th for 9 wonderful nights. Wish it was longer but the bills must get paid!

Last time, Martin and I showed up at Pono around 10:30 and the chicken wasn't done yet, so we waited and were the first to get it fresh and piping hot out of the fryer! Its best that way, ya?

Anything else new on Kaua'i? Oh, I know. Is the TipTop still good at breakfast? Is the brunch at the Pville still aweonolicious? We've never been to Duke's, so we will have to do that this time. Hmmm...anything else?

Oh, my DH makes a beeline for Costco every time we hit the islands. I'm sure he'll have the same "radar when we go back to Kauai!

Now....keep in mind that Manju (or manjyu as it is sometimes spelled) is sold all over Hawaii, so if you miss it on Kauai, you can get it in other places. I like haupia or chocolate mochi best!

Won't it taste better on Kaua'i?

DH says the Costco dogs taste better on Maui than in San Jose. ;-)

Okay Mels, so in the 24 hours that we will be on Oahu you will need to take me trinket shopping, manju munching, and bon dancing! Yippee!

Basically, it's folk dancing brought over by the Japanese to Hawaii. Summer is bon dance season...it's a time when the Japanese call their ancestors back to honor them, dance with them, etc. At the end of summer, they have a HUGE lantern floating ceremony. This is when you theoretically send your ancestors back.
