Heading there next week, checking it out as a possible snowbird destination. This winter has done me in. Plan on staying in town in the historic center, but will have a car to explore the outlying areas. Choice was determined by its position, south enough to be warmish, within a six-hour drive of DC (grandchildren). So, activities, restaurants, nearby towns to check out? Will enjoy the antebellum architecture, I'm sure.

I've never been to Charleston, but that sounds promising.

Battleship North Carolina is worth a vist, at that time a lot of the parts were accesible; one of the main batteries, engine room, accomodations, bridge, etc.

River Walk was a pleasant area, the only restaurant that I remember from 2013 and is still around, is the German Cafe in the Cotton Exchange.
(Unfortunately, our kids favourite, Chuck E. Cheese, is now "Permanently closed")

They did enjoy Wrightsville Beach, a typical barrier island town, as they did North Carolina Beach.

Bentonville Historical Battlefield site is about half-way between I95 and Wilmington.

I'll be interested in what you find. An old friend and his wife (in their 60s) re-located to a gated community outside Wilmington, from Long Island, and were very happy, but more than that, I can't tell you. Are you considering anywhere else, too?

We stayed in Wilmington for two nights in October, 2018 as part of a road trip around North Carolina. We stayed at the Fairfield Inn. I really liked Wilmington. It's not super infested with tourists. The Battleship North Carolina was one of the most fascinating sites I have seen in the US. We spent at least three hours on the ship, and the explanations were excellent. The cutsey restaurant area at the riverwalk was so nice. We found an unpretentious restaurant for dinner, and then walked around. We also visited Moores Creek National Battefield, which we enjoyed, since we're big history buffs. We did the battlefied in the morning, and the ship in the afternoon.

We also went to Beaufort, North Carolina en route to Wilmington, but it is two hours away so it may not be worth it. But boy, is that a charming town, not to be confused with Beaufort, South Carolina, which was also charming/cutesy.

I live in Wilmington. Retired here 10+ years ago.
Would recommend river boat ride downtown.
Downtown casual restaurants: The Basic, Beer Barrio (tacos)
Downtown fancier restaurants: Circa, Florianos
Nearby: Southport area --1 hr drive
Weather: very hot and muggy in summer, some code days in winter--January was very cold this year, we even had 4" of snow, but it didn't last.

I think the comparison to Charleston may be a bit of a stretch. Wilmington is more casual and beach-y. The architecture is more Victorian than Federal style.

Church is a major social hub (that goes in general for North Carolina)

The 6 hour drive to DC is definitely aspirational.

Even before we reached Wilmington, I'd come to the conclusion that I was merely overreacting to an unusually frigid and snowy winter and would probably not be relocating there. However, we had a pleasant enough time walking the historic center, hopping on a tour boat, visiting the battleship North Carolina and dining in a few nice restaurants. We particularly enjoyed Seabird. https://www.seabirdnc.com. I usually scorn non-traditional martinis, but the concoction they served was terrific, and finally convinced me to order "Nick and Nora" glasses to enhance my cocktails. It's a young town, and caters to the students at an enormous community college (15,000). The historic center is, as obx mentioned, primarily Victorian, but no less scenic for that.

The drive back proved the accuracy of obx's predition that six hours to DC was aspirational. A car crash south of Quantico took forty minutes to clear, then a short respite led to another traffic jam which extended to Baltimore. Not something I'd like to do on a regular basis!

Although I’ve been enjoying exploring other parts of North Carolina in recent years, while Wilmington has piqued my interest for some time, I have yet to cobble together a trip there. Thanks for the reminder and giving a sufficiently intriguing report to hopefully make a visit become reality for me one day.
