Blacktie, do you actually still live on the west coast? If so what part? I'm very inclined to move in that direction, but my husband has lived in the east all his life and is somewhat resistent (although he did enjoy a trip to San Francisco about 10 years ago...)How is the market for legal jobs?

Travdis, can you get me a job in Portland? : )
Hubby and I are in Chicago, want to move to the NW soon. We just bought a place last year and my career is going well, may be a year or two before we can really consider it and not lose money. how do People get the guts to move with no job? That is our fear. we move and have no job for 6 mos and run through all our savings. Egad!
Someday we will golf weekly, ski on wkends and enjoy nature. : )

yes..and I am again...by next summer I will be in Seattle which is about 3000 miles away from me now....I wish I could fit all my belongings in a U-Haul and just go !...Coincidentally my company last week just told us we will be able to work from home soon, so it looks like I may not have the added pressure of looking for a job...I will be so thankful for that...I moved to Orlando from Atlanta after 13 years (grew up in FL) and after 2 years I want to go...My family is now mostly in the Pacific NW and we want to start another family business and spend more time together...I am looking forward to it !

Yep, I picked up and left the States in 2001 to Latvia and then left Latvia in 2003 to Italy. Let me know when the democrats are back in office...joking (kind of).

amy_zena--I currently live in Ireland, and while my husband and I are planning to return to the US sometime in the next few years, if Bush gets reelected, it won't be until after he's out of office!

My husband is a high school football coaching who has decided he wants to get into coaching college. We have a few friends who husband did the same thing and now coach professional football so I know we will move around a good bit which I am all for. The one thing I am not ready for, is the fact that his first job (and maybe his 2nd and 3rd) will be in some small (tiny) non descript town. We live in Atlanta now and the move to a tiny town does not excite me. However if it eventually lets me see different areas, I can deal with it.

Hey! This is what I'm doing as we speak. Last year, living in Gainesville, FL, not a bad place, but a big bog, I quit my high-paying job with a federal agency, took temp work, got the house ready to sell (which it did in 2 hours), and moved back to South Florida in May where I'm attempting to eke out an existence as a writer/artist. I'm scared witless but having the time of my life, even if I sometimes forget to change out of my pajamas after breakfast. I've had one book review published (not bad for two months). Life is just too short to spend it getting beat up at work. If push comes to shove - and when the money starts to run out - I'll get some more temp jobs to keep the cats in litter. Writing is actually hard work but it isn't sucking my soul out. I expreience joy every day.

Ally: I have friends who went to Trinidad & Tobago to build resort housing. According to their daughter, it's paying off after more than ten years of real hard work. And they aren't spring chickens! Good luck to you in Costa Rica.

Vast: GO - that's an order!

So many courageous souls on this board.

travdis,

What a coincidence this morning to read your post. I've been looking for someone who relocated to Portland. My husband and I fell in love with Portland and I've been thinking about moving there. I'm from Southern California and spoiled by sunny days so I'm wondering if I can get used to so many grey and rainy days in Portland. I've thought about renting a house for the winter just to see before I pack up everything. Did your family adjust well to the grey days? Have you met anyone else from Southern California who's taken the plunge? I'm very interested in any information you have. Thanks.

Jeanette--My parents moved from southern CA to OR over 40 years ago. They loved it up here! They had to go back to CA though (job transfers) and my dad keeps saying he wants to get back up here. So yes, people in your situation can and do relocate here and fall in love with it and don't want to leave We have lived all over the country and were so happy to come back here to Portland! We just moved back here earlier this year.

I've been enjoying this thread and just had to post, as I am planning the exact same sort of thing. As soon as our house in the Midwest sells, I'm quitting my job and we are off to Anchorage, AK. Don't have jobs or anything lined up, just going to take the plunge!

Very interesting to hear about all the people who have either done this sort of thing or are planning to do it. I'm not alone in my insanity!!!!

About 10 years ago, my sister-in-law just up and moved to San Francisco, and it seemed to work out for her.
