Anyone Been to Cedar Breaks?

I'm taking my daughter on a very short trip to southwestern Utah in mid-September. My plans so far have us spending part of a day in the Cedar Breaks area on the way from Bryce to Zion.

A short hike or two and the views are what I had in mind.

I have recently read that Rte 143 is the steepest paved road in Utah.

Well, Rte 12 with its "steep road, sharp curves" was more than enough for me. Oncoming traffic probably didn't appreciate me straddling the yellow line (if there was one).

I'm ok skipping Rte 143 and taking Rte 14 & 148. If they're reasonable. I don't want a heart attack.

Anybody drive Rte 14 & 148?

What are they like?

Thanks.

Route 143 sounds like a great drive to me, but only you can decide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_State_Route_143

Some people don't like twisty mountain roads. I do.
Some don't like the desert in the summer. I do.
Some don't like to sit close to the stage in theaters. I do.

Myer,
I know a lot has been said on here about YS, but I hope you had a good trip there and still post a report sometime.

I am considering CB for next year as well. It is around 10k altitude, so not sure if anyone of us would hike, except myself. There doesn't seem to be a lot of trails there, only 3 or 4, I think.

spiro,

Actually, there are a few trails of interest outside the park off Rte 14. My concern is the driving.

I was not very comfortable on many parts of Rte 12.

I may just veer off 89 onto 14 for one hike and get to Zion early and spend more time there. Being a Sunday I'm hopeful the construction won't impact us and we'll be able to do the Canyon Overlook hike.

The trip to YS was very good. Some of my comments will be somewhat different as I'm just so d@mn efficient.

I would have liked to see some more wildlife but other than that I saw everything on my A and B lists.

Didn't see a grizzly.

Three black bears (one too far and the others at dusk in the forest but very close).

One moose.

Many deer of different type.

Prong horn but far away.

A coyote jumped out behind me and I think something similar walk beside me.

Plus small stuff.

Working on the report and reviewing way too many photos.
