My husband and I are thinking about taking a trip to Key West February 2000. Does anyone have any opinions/suggestions about visiting there? Places to stay, eat, etc? Thanks!

Try their website at www.keywest.com there are plenty of listings for hotels, inns, B&B's-with pictures. There are a few other posts on Key West, with some good answers, too.

The wife and I stayed at Center Court Cottages back in May. Great place.

Do a search for "Key West Trip Report" on this forum for my thoughts.

Mallory Square off Duval Street for the sunsets. Many people gather there for them.
The Hemmingway House is interesting.
Fort Zachary Taylor is cool. There's a public beach there. It costs $1.50 per person arriving on foot or bike. $5 per car for two people then $.50 for the others in the car.
We stayed at the Garden House B&B (different from The Garden's Hotel)on Elizabeth Street. It's o.k.. I think there are better places.
** my best suggestion: stay at a place with on-site parking!!! There is very little street parking for tourists. The locals (deservatively so) have most of the street parking designated for their use. These have an "RP" painted in the parking place. We had to park on a lot for $20 for the weekend. And it was several blocks form our B&B.
We ate at Kelly's and were very pleased. It is owned by Kelly McGillis of "Top Gun" fame.
Next time we go, we plan on taking a boat or sea plane to the Dry Tortugas and Ft. Jefferson Park. You can actually camp out there overnight if you want. There are many cpmpanies that make this trip.

We were there about 5 years ago. We stayed at the La Concha Holiday Inn and really liked it. We parked our car the first day and didn't get back in it until we were ready to leave. The La Concha is on Duval street and in the middle of everything. We walked to dinner, to malory's pier, to the dock to catch the boat to go snorkeling. I don't think Key West is necessarily a place to go to enjoy the beaches. Snorkeling, fishing, downtown duval street with all the shops is more what it's about. I wouldn't cared much for Key West if we had stayed on the beach or off of Duval Street. The Holiday Inn also has a bar on top where you can watch the sunset.

Key West - my favorite place in the world!!! Unless you like to walk a whole lot, stay in Old Town, which is the center of the action (restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, etc) If you want a view of the Gulf, you'll need to stay in one of the hotels on Front Street: the Ocean Key House, Hilton, Pier House, Hyatt, Galleon. If money is no object, stay at the Ocean Key House in a condo. They have balconys overlooking the water and are wonderful. All the above have web sites, so you might try doing a search for them. Key West has tons of really nice B & Bs, too. February is a great time for Key West!!!

You have to go. My husband and I went last year in Feb. and stayed at the La Concha Holiday Inn. It is in the middle of everything. We parked our car and didn't have to drive. Everything was in walking distant. There is so much to see as some of the other posts have said.

I stayed at a downtown Holiday Inn (perhaps theone referred to earlier) in the heart of downtown.It was an old pplace, but in first rate condition, and seemed to convey the appropriate Key West mood. You could imagine Bogart stayed there. Plus, being central, it solved the parking problem. A number of women in Key West chose to leave parts of their swimming attire at home; tourists therefore may find some pre-tanning prevents particularly uncomfortable red patches. Take lots of money. Take the tourist train to get an idea of what is where, and then just stroll and relax.

I was just there last month. If you stay in or near Old Town, you won't really need a car because everything is within walking distance. Assuming you fly in, just take a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Recommend visiting the lighthouse which is across the street from the Hemingway House. Also Harry Truman's "Little White House" and the Mel Fisher museum. Take a leisurely stroll or two up and down Duval Street. There's a special ambiance about Key West that will make you feel you're in a different world. Have a wonderful time.
