Check rates on Orbitz, Expedia and Hotwire. Then bid lower on Priceline.

Diana, I reserved two separate convertibles, one week in Maui, one week in Kauai, with Alamo at the rate (includes taxes!) of $221 (base rate was 177, also includes free additional driver). Got the rate code "O2" from this site, this was over a $100 savings from previous reservation...you can do a search on this site, for the exact posting "car rental" in the Hawaii section of U.S. Hope this works for you! Timing has alot to do with it - another poster had different dates, shorter lead time, was unable to book (mine's in September, booked in July). Good luck!

Thanks Joan. I used the code and got the same rate but WITHOUT a free additional driver. Any ideas why not?

After extensive research, I booked a compact car for Kauai with Alamo for the month Feb 2003, using a Costco discount for a total of 660.12, whcih includes all taxes and fees.Base rate was 126.89 per week.
The closest I came to this price was 696.43 from National with AARP discount. Dollar was 939.96, Thrifty 903.00, Avis 791.96, Budget 849.97.
I have read alot of complaints about Alamo on this site, but for this price. I'll put up with it. Some of the other companies, can't come close. Just thought I'd pass this along.

There was a good article in the Sunday (8/25) NY Times about getting good deals on car rentals on the net. It's available on the NYTimes website. The title is "Playing Car Rental Bingo on the Net."

I belong to National Car Rental Emerald Club and booked a full size car in Kauai in September for 7 days 6 nights for $235.00. Then I went on their web site and got a Mini Van for the same dates for $227.64. We got unlimited mileage and as long as the 2nd driver is over 25 with proper ID there is no extra charge. I was happy with the price. Hope this is helpful
