Please tell Mr. Pickle that the permanent collection is a bit disappointing.

IMDoneHere, I'd been thinking of visiting MoMA. How does their Impressionist and post-Impressionist collect compare to the Guggenheim?

I think Mr. Pickle is a little more interested in the building itself - we just rewatched Men in Black, which brought it to his mind - but we would both enjoy the art.

There is no comparison. MoMA is probably the finest modern art museum in the world and they have seminal Impressionist pieces. BUT, I would go to the Met where they probably have more pieces on display and it is more comfortable atmosphere.

Last year we had a 17 year old visitor from overseas and we spent 2 1/2 hours in the 9 rooms or so of the Impressionists.

I don't recall any Impressionists at the Guggenheim.

In my book, the Guggenheim is one of the best designed art museums in the world, with one of the most uninspired collections and exhibitions in the world. I honestly don't think I'm alone in that assessment.

The Guggenheim has very little of its permanent collection on display at any one time. You can never be sure if the artworks you are hoping to see will actually be on display. The spiral galleries hold temporary exhibitions, so be sure to check online or you may be disappointed.

Last year, we spent our limited time at the Met in the Impressionist rooms, with a quick look at the Vermeers as well, so I don't know that I would go back this year. Maybe someday we'll actually be able to spend more than a day and a half in New York. In the meantime, I will definitely share all this with Mr. Pickle, and suggest we visit MoMA instead.

Just wanted to add that I completely agree with NeoPatrick about the New York Guggenheim, and would definitely say MoMA is a better use of your time.

Last night Mr. Pickle said, "What do you think about seeing a show? We could probably use the TKTS booth and get something at a discount."

Since I'm not a musical fan, I would prefer a play. Have any of you seen one lately we might enjoy? I might make an exception for Beautiful, though, since we both like Carole King's music.

ellenem took me there several years ago and it will definitely be one of my first stops on my next visit.

Veselka, was once a reliable inexpensive Eastern European hangout. The walls were covered with caricatures of the artists who inhabited the place. You never knew who you would find at the next table. Now it has become hip, more expensive, inconsistent, with baguettes and other concessions to the kids in the neighborhood.

If you go the Essex Market, there is an ice cream stand at one of the entrances, that make incredible ice cream sandwiches.

Also for gelati-Il Laboratorio del Gelato, across the street from Katz's.

Go to Economy Candy on Rivington for the largest selection, I have seen, many old time favorites.

And for the best donuts in the City, Donut Plant on Grand Street.

I'd noticed the ice cream stand when I was looking at the offerings at Essex Street Market. Sounds like it will be just right on what will most likely be a hot day!

Wow, some great ideas here - we will be in NYC in late September, so I'm going to follow some of these suggestions!

I hope you and others can use those ideas, scdreamer. In our case, Mr. Pickle had a gall bladder attack Friday night. We went to the ER in Stamford early Saturday morning and he spent the next two nights in the hospital, so we never got to spend time in NYC.

However, we have some great suggestions for the next trip!
