There can be a lot of miles between places to see. We visited a few years ago. We loved the Adirondack style furniture and visited a few shops. There was a museum type of place with a cottage that could be toured. Sorry, can't remember where it was. It's definitely a big area. Hope someone can recommend some hiking trails. We prefer NH's White Mountains for better scenery and things to do.

Late Sept is the perfect time to visit the Adirondacks. The fall color should be great! The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mtn Lake and the new Wild Center in Tupper Lake are good stops. Maybe rent a canoe in Saranac Lake and paddle around. Lake Placid is filled with nice shops and Olympic venues. You can hop on a bobsled ride - that's pretty exciting! Tons of great hiking trails everywhere and Sept is the perfect time - no bugs, great temps, colorful foliage.
Since I don't know how many days you have or what activities you enjoy, it is kind of hard to answer your question.
