This is a good thread. Things have changed a lot in Philadelphia in terms of food since I was a student. Ate in several good restaurants last month. Can recommend Le Bec Fin, Morimoto, Alma de Cuba and Vetri. Daughter is starting college at Bryn Mawr in the fall so we shall be trying some of your suggestions.

After just having taken a tour of the Italian Market area in Philly (9th street area) for the first time - I can say that we do have great food here. My first trip to Isgro's (yum!) and Slice pizzeria (even yummier) along with other greats such as Anthony's chocolate where I had the best blood orange gelato ever. If you are traveling to the Philadelphia are - you must take the culinary tour hosted by Chef Jacquie at Taste for Travel. The most authentic and fun trip to the Italian Market you will find. Love her! The tours run only on Thursday and you have to contact Jacquie directly. Tours are scheduled every Thursday at 9:30, space is limited, for into contact [email protected] to reserve a spot - tell her Alicia sent you! Enjoy!

We went to Monk's last weekend based mostly on recommendations in this thread. The food (mussels and duck ragout) and beer was great. It was VERY crowded and we had a fairly long wait even though we arrived at 5:40. Probably mostly due to people eating early for the Phillies game.

We also went to Naked Chocolate in University City for cupcakes for our son's birthday.

We plan on working our way through other recommendations on the list on other visits.

Hi Vttraveler! Were you in UCity for UPenn parents' weekend? We were at Penne and noticed a lot of parents with students and were wondering if it were parents' weekend.

Lots of great stuff on this thread. I'll add a couple of my favorites:

Kobe beef sliders at Varga Bar (10th and Spruce)
Pho at Pho Xe Lua in Chinatown (10th and Race)
Diablo Mussels at the Devil's Den (11th and Ellsworth)
Wasabi Mashed Potatoes at many of Steven Starr's restaurants (I've gotten them at Buddakan, Continental, and Pod)

Birdie--yes we were there for Penn Family Weekend. Our son is a sophomore this year. WE'd planned to go last year but then he had to be away so we missed it. I am not sure it was necessary from his point of view but we had a nice time visiting with him.
We tried flying from Manchester NH instead of driving the whole way RT which was a little more expensive and a little shorter and quite a lot less stressful.
We had great views of Manhattan from the plane on the way back.
It was fun to see everyone excited about the Phillies.

Since I just searched this out to put it in a post, I thought I'd add one of the best things I've ever had: truffle burrata from DiBruno brothers. It's amazingly heavenly.
(I got mine from the 17th and Chestnut location; I love the Italian Market site, too, but it's a bit easier to shop at 17th and Chestnut, since it's, oh, about eight time bigger.)

Cheers, Birdie!

Oh, and I can't believe I left out my favorite sandwich of all time: domestic prosciutto and sharp provolone with roasted peppers on a roll from Dattilo's Deli in the northeast. http://dattilosdeli.com/ Or, actually, pretty much any sandwich from there.

(I haven't had dinner yet. My filet mignon--no joke--isn't sounding nearly as good as that sandwich would be.)

Sad PS: No more Naked Chocolate. I am still in mourning on that one.

Federal Donuts gets a lot of attention, but I thought their donuts were just eh. People do rave about their fried chicken.

I miss Naked Chocolate, too. I would live it when I was driving down Walnut and could find a spot. (I felt that it woudl be a prohibitively expensive cup of hot chocolate if I had to pay to park at lot). I still have a little bit of their hot chocolate mix leftover.

+1 on missing Naked Chocolate. Anywhere else to get good European style hot chocolate in Philly?

Also missing Horizons. But maybe Vedge will do the trick, haven't made it there yet.

Just re-reading this thread makes me feel very itchy for the warm weather to come back so can sit outside again with the mozzarella from Claudio's and bread from Sarcone's!

Amy, DD and I picked up pasta, sauce, and garlic rabe at DiBrunos to eat in our room the last time we were in Philly. The AKA rooms have gorgeous full kitchens so it was actually a treat to cook on a weekend away. Not something I usually willingly do.

I'm planning two trips up to Philly in the next few weeks so if there are any other new recommendations, I'd love to see them.

Birdie, if you're looking for restaurant suggestions as well as specific foods to eat, I've been part of two celebrations recently, one at the new incarnation of Le Bec Fin and one at Vernick, and both were fabulous.

Birdie, I haven't been downtown too much of late, and I'm woefully behind in the restaurant department, but I do have a couple of sandwich suggestions for anyone venturing a bit further afield--North Philly:

1. Cheese steak or hoagie from Max's, Broad St. and Germantown Ave:
http://missalg.tumblr.com/phood

2. Pork sandwich from the one, the only, the original, Porky's Point: Yum. There's a post about it here that's pure poetry:

Thank you to both of you. We're going up for DD's bday soon and I, of course, waited too long. I tried Vernick because I had read so many good things about it but it's all booked up. So is Oesteria where we celebrated last year and had a great time. I did get a table at Supper but I'm going to try and find something a little livelier.

I want to go up for the garden show so I should book Vernick now to get in.

The sandwiches sound wonderful, Amy, and you are making me hungry. It's a shame that we tend to stay in center city. I haven't even been to the Northern Liberties. Someday when I win the lottery and get that little apartment in Philly...
