I traveled with my 16, 5 and 3-year old.
We took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland. It was a fantastic trip - beautiful scenery.
Then we took the Coast Starlight from Portland to LA. Not as good - train was older, no pillows, two hour stop in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.
Lastly, we took the California Zephyr (I think that was the name of it) from LA to Chicago. Incomparible beauty when you drop out of the Rockies into the Plains in Colorado.
We had virtually no money so we slept in coach (young kids on floor - they slept soundly, and 16-year old and me tried to sleep across the seats - not comfortable at all) and brought our food in an ice chest.
We met lots of people and had a memorable trip.
