America West is America West IMO.
Whether you fly them Boston-Phoenix or Tampa to Sacramento.
There are MANY opinions about AWA in the archives here which are within 6-12 months old.
AWA is a close to no-frills airline. But they do assign seats, so none of that silly waiting like at Southwest.
Service is like all others in the same market segment these days (USAir, Northwest are similar to AWA).
On time performance was poor in 1999-2000. AWA was #1 in on time performance for the last quarter of 2001.
I just don't find any real differences among the two big groups of AWA/USAir/NWA and UA/AA/Delta/Continental.
Group 2 is slightly better than group 1.
But there are no consistently stellar performers among the major airlines in this country.

Are we only allowed to reply if we flew out of Tampa? ;-)
I've used America West a few times flying to AZ in the early 90's and 2 years ago had an America West vacation package to Vegas. No complaints. Good service, on time, friendly. To add to it, I had great package deal through the airline (hotel & air) with Mandalay Bay. By the time I checked in, the hotel was sold out and since my reservation was prepaid, the upgraded me to a suite since that was all they had left. Vegas certainly knows how to make a first impression.

We flew American West out of Newark last Aug.It stunk. From beginning to end, there were problems, overbooking, late, and the same on the return trip-Will never use them again.
Continental is the best so far..non-stop from NY/NJ and good service,on time very time.
