Amarillo Texas
I have posted requests for Northern NM attractions and had lots of grat responses. We are leaving Breckinridge CO going to Mesa Verde, onto Santa Fe and the Jemex trail.
After that we are heading to Amarillo. Sis says Rt. 66 goes through it. Can anyone advise on what to see there?
Thanks you have all been so much help!

What's to see? Not blasted much. I have driven through it a dozen (maybe two dozen) times and spent the night a few times (going from Dallas to the New mexico mountains or Colorado) Palo Duro Canyon http://www.palodurocanyon.com/ isn't far away but that is about all I can think of at this time. Hopefully others will chime in on your request. Are you passing through on the way somewhere else?

Yes, in the end , we willend up in Maine, where we live. On a roadtrip after dropping my niece in CO.
After TExas, we will head to Memphis. Graceland and Sun City Recording Studios.
My sister chose Amarillo because it was part of Rt. 66 which she wants to follow and which I have heard that there is not much left!!
If there is another more interesting route from Santa Fe to TX or OK, please let me know!!

I was in the area a couple of years ago. You can also stop and take some pics of the Cadillac Ranch(old caddies stuck into the ground like a modern day Stonehenge), you can see it from the interstate and can also pull off and walk up closer. My friend was a RT66 buff and had a book that detailed where you could leave the interstate to travel portions of the old road and what relics were still present-- to me it was kind of boring w/ just the occasional old building. If I remember correctly, in "downtown" Amarillo there is a portion of RT66 and a bunch of antique shops if you are into that sort of thing. We also went to Palo Duro and had a nice hike. Other than that, we did not find much to do in the area.

There isn't a better way for your final destination. Research Rt. 66 and see if there are parts you want to see and plot those out; otherwise stick to the Interstate and drive the speed limit. All those towns, Texas and Oklahoma (and just about anywhere else) just love tourists who leave large donations in the form of traffic fines (no, not a victom, just a lawyer who knows speed trap jurisdictions love out of state tourists who won't fly back a thousand miles to contest a ticket).
