Alternative tour of NYC

Hi! I'm planning to visit NYC for spring break, and I'd like to visit alternative clubs/bars/places to get away from the usual touristy stuff. I'm 21 and am looking for places where 20-somethings would hang out.

I'm too old to know much about 20 something hang-outs, but I suggest you check out Time Out New York Magazine and the Village Voice newspaper(they both also have web sites) they have listings of what's going on around the city.

a safe and fun area that is big with the 20 somethings is the upper east side - 2nd ave in the 60's to 80's and the upper west side as well. east side is more preppy, west side more artsy!

Check out The Knitting Factory on Leonard Street. The performance space upstairs draws a mix of ages but the Tap Room downstairs was all early twenties when I visited - funky and hip atmosphere.

Jenn: It depends on what you mean by "alternative". The Upper East Side is quite a homogeneous post college preppy crowd. But if its diversity you want, head to the East Village or Tribeca. There you will find the pulse of downtown NYC and its much hipper than the Upper East Side.
